hhhmm....it's sounding more and more like a hardware issue.

Try opening Safari, and then going to Safari > Reset Safari. Leave everything checked and click Reset. Then restart and see if you can connect to the unsecured network.

    lol....it must be pretty frustrating.

Go to the Apple > System Preferences > Network and select AirPort on the left and click Advanced. Go to the TCP/IP tab and set "Configure IPv4" to "using DHCP" and "Configure IPv6" to "Off". Click OK and then click Apply.

I'm really grasping at straws here!

When you connect to the unsecured network, try entering 74.125.77.104 into Safari's address bar and see if it can go to that.

The unsecured network doesnt seem to be on now. Will try it tomorrow to see if anything happens. My bed is calling me, so thanks again for all your help and advice.

OK, if you can't get it sorted, get in touch with the people who gave it to you and tell them they gave you a broken MacBook, and you'd like a working one please. The fact it will connect via ethernet but not wifi suggests to me there's something up with the AirPort card.

    Night!
