phoebe03cat wrote:Hi - hope you don't mind as this is right off thread. Spotted it as my 16/17 year old daughter is thinking of joining the RAF next year or the year after. If she makes it she wants to go into medicine but would probably try for officer entry anyway. She joined cadets and just loved the team work and got the taste for it. Sadly the toll of A levels has meant she had to stop going and has lost touch. Would anyone possibly be willing to chat to her and let her know what its REALLY like if I sent a PM? Would help a lot with her agonising!! :A
I think it's a great move for her if she chooses that route. I actually work with the Raf and have done for 7 and a half years. So I know what it's like both sides. OH is an officer and it's quite a nice enviroment. Theres always a chance for change and plenty to see and do! xx0 -

Bruggen is /was okay being so close to the border with Holland was just amazing lots to see and do worth stopping off there if you have to meet half way with OH .The Dutch love the Brits and mostly they try and speak English they know we can't get our tounge around their crazy words.
lol no was too shocked! I wouldn't mind seeing holland.
I think OH is looking foward to drinking more..................hmmmm he's had a good ole pratice here for 18years of service :beer:0 -
If you're elligible for Indulgence flights, it would be worth checking whether Brize still have Gateway House - having a hotel room makes travelling the day before much more practical. The Wildenrath flights used to operate every Tuesday but departed very early (5am?) so GH was ideal.
Alternatively, the RAF used to charter aircraft from Luton to Hannover which may be worth looking into. As has been said, the German train network is excellent and everyone seems happy enough to speak English
Good Luck - you'll LOVE it !!0 -

You're in the Midlands - have you noticed that there are a few direct flights from Birmingham International airport to Paderborn/Lippstadt?
Look at the airport websites and you'll find them on the Arrivals/Departures pages.
These flights don't seem to be on the flight timetables, so there may be something special about them.
I don't know if you could get on them or not, but surely it's worth a try? Would save you having to go to Manchester or Stansted..
Please let us know how you get on.
I wouldn't mind going to Paderborn myself this summer!0 -

Hiya, Yeah I've been looking into birmingham rather than manchester. I can get train then hopefully instead of leaving car.
We looked at hannover then realised paderborn was that little bit closer to the station.
found that airberlin is cheapest to there and the hlx was very cheap to hann.

Yes the gateway is still there0 -
Not sure which station your OH is posted to,but Air Berlin also fly to Munster/
Osnabruck if that is closer or cheaper.0 -
Don't know where your OH is posted.
This site shows where RyanAir fly to the now Ex RAF Laarbruch
Weeze Airport
I did one tour here with two tours in RAF Bruggen.(now Ex RAF also)
We lived in Roermond for a while which can be seen on this map
Germany is made for the car with superb Autobahns which are toll free.
We used to drive\ferry back home if we had to, fairly easy if a long 12 hour journey from Leeds.
Indulgence flights
Possibly not the bargain they used to be what with the low budget carriers and they were very hard to get ( mind you your Oh is an Officer:rolleyes:)
IMHO
Drive and then load the boot up with the Military DUTY FREE cigs and booze (for personal use;))
The Military also got TAX free petrol coupons which made petrol cost to be about 50p per litre.
We thought nothing of driving 200 miles to an evening event and then returning the same night.
No speed limit, no roadworks and cheap petrol....:D

Hi,
Just came across your thread. My husband is in the RAF and we live at Brize Norton. This is the 'airport' for the forces and is where everyone flies in and out of. There are such things as indulgence flights whereby you can book yourself onto a flight if a plane is going to your destination. As you may be aware things can be hit and miss in the forces, but if you ring Brize Norton and make enquiries they should be able to tell you what you need to do to get one of these flights.
I don't think they are particularly luxurious but they are cheap. I have never used the service myself but know people who used to get flights all over the world!
Hope this helps in some way!
