Skype on Mobile

Options
What's the deal with Skype on mobile. I have been using Skype on my pc for ages now. If you have a Skype mobile are these free of charge calls to Skype users on line?

Does it work if you are travelling abroad?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

To use skype on a mobile you need either a data plan to include internet data usage or pay per MB used as an extra outside of your allowance.

If you have a inclusive data allowance then these calls to another skype user could be free or at least taken from your data allowance.

As for abroad then no they are not free as you will find nearly all data plans are for use in the UK much like call minute allowances are.

And data charges outside the UK are expensive. £2/mb

The best roaming data plans are those offered by O2 to Blackberry users who offer unlimited worldwide data plans for £20 month.

So really a skype does not by pass roaming call charges, then again o2 have the best solution to this.

    Rather inaccurate assumptions, I'm afraid

Skype calls on mobile are not data based calls, but invisibly to the user are GSM calls via an ordinary pstn access. There is a small amount of data used, for stuff like presence info, logging in, whether friends are online etc

But Skype calls are only possible while the phone is on a 3 network. They will be free for the moment, but 3 Like Home is about to be phased out on 30th June; it isn't yet clear what happens next.

On other networks, ordinary calls will be made at roaming rates
