From 1 May, there will be no data charges or top-up fees for either contract or pay-as-you-go customers who use Skype on 3’s UK network. Anyone with a 3 Skype-enabled handset will be able to buy a 3 SIM and talk as much as they want to other Skype users without ever having to pay another penny.

During the summer, 3 will expand its offer making it possible for anyone with a compatible unlocked 3G handset in the UK, to take advantage of free Skype calls, whether or not their phone is from 3. Anyone that wants to talk on a mobile for free will be able to use a Skype-enabled 3 SIM to make and receive totally free Skype-to-Skype calls and to use Skype’s instant messaging

Press release: http://threemediacentre.co.uk/Content/Detail.asp?ReleaseID=396&NewsAreaID=2

There is bound to be a reply from someone saying 'but it is already free' - I suggest you read the full press release first :);).

A very poor business move in my opinion, it may get people on thier payg but it is also going to cut out a huge earnings potential for them in PAYG if everyone can talk for free.At least how it is now you have to have the tenner topped up each month to keep sykpe active. we shall see how it pans out.

My biggest concern is that it proves to more popular than expected and then the network infastructure cannot cope with the demand, we have to rememeber that it might be the biggest 3G network but is still prob the smallest overall.

Dont you still have to pay for the internet on the mobile to be able to use Skype?

And its Skype to Skype so both parties have to have skype enabled phones.

And next step up (according to the skype site) is the paid skype version which allows to make free video calls.

No you dont need internet access on 3 phones to use Skype or MSN messenger. you can already use your Skype credit on 3;s phones to phone mobiles and landlines outside of the UK but not within.

Yes BUT what I am saying is you need a pay and go Three mobile dont you? or some Three plan to use Skype. And that plan is what pays for the data (i.e. internet usage with Skype)

No. I think you have totally missed what is being said. You will need a 3 sim card and compatible handset. You do not need a contract and you do not need to topup a PAYG phone with credit to use it.

Hmmm I remain to suspicious - there must be a catch - according to three site

"All you need is a compatible mobile and a 3 price plan to get started. "

Now suppose you do get a pay and go phone on Three, top it first time - how long does that top up last - some of these pay and go plans you need to keep in credit to keep using the phone?

What is on the website is not relevant as that is what currently applies. The first three words in the first post should clarify that.

From the link given in the first post:
“In future you will be able to buy a 3 SIM for unlimited Skype-to-Skype calls for less than the price of a cup of coffee and talk for as much as you want without ever paying us another penny. We won’t ask you for a top-up or a monthly commitment. If you want to talk on a mobile for free, just join us and give it a go. This is for everyone.

Why can't people read before they comment?

Well it is a forum and you have to ask questions and get answers which is the point.

Anyway - having READ everything - we can now cancel all out contracts and live happily ever after.

Although everything you asked was already answered.

Now, if only everyone had and used Skype...
