Just to let you all know that the PC is now back up and running ok.

Been to PC world and purchased a replacement graphics card.

One thing I've learnt - I cannot just go in and buy any graphics card and slap it into my pc. My old graphics card for a 4x AGP, so therefore the new card had to be 4x AGP compatible!

Only 2 cards in the shop that would have done the job.

Nice lad at PC World in Stockport guided us through it and within an hour we were back home and the PC is as good as new!!

THANKS TO YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP AND ADVICE DURING THE DAY - I'm now off for a glass of plonk and a chill.

    Best wishes. 8-))

I would'nt put oil on it either !!

there is special "switch" lubricant you can get for maplins but it sounds like the fan is shot

I have cleaned and lubricated several CPU and PSU fans using a lubricant like WD40. Over time, the heat causes the bearing lubricant to dry out. Sounds like all that was needed was a new fan rather than a complete new card.

    ;)
