Buying new Desktop, want XP not Vista

I am looking to buy a new Desktop, I currently have a Dell Dimension (old I know!) which has served me well for many years. I want to replace it with a new desktop it for business purposes, so I want a reasonably good spec. However I am not interested in fancy graphics and gaming etc., so can do without all the extra capacity and widgets required for those.

I also want XP Professional not Vista, as I don't like Vista and it is incompatible with some of the software I use.

The only XP pre-loaded PCs Dell seem to offer online are the very big gaming-capacity type desktops, which cost a lot and are excessive for what I need.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might get a decent new PC with XP?

Thanks for any help!

I want a new car. I'd like it to run on 4star, not this newfangled unleaded rubbish
I do understand that fewer and fewer garages are supplying/supporting 4star....indeed the producers themselves have said they will stop making and supporting it soon, but, as a Luddite, I feel this is the garages loss, not mine.

I'd also like some new windows...but none of this double glazed rubbish. I want proper single thickness pane windows...maybe leaded...

I'd like a new television...but all the ones I see in the shops nowadays are colour sets, I don't need..or particularly want colour. Why can't the manufacturers be forced to make more black and white TV sets? Surely everyone knows the afternoon matinee on channel 4 looks best in monochrome!

    I'd like....

    In reply to DatabaseError:

I'd like an operating system that I don't find totally annoying, and that is compatible with all the software that I need to use for my business.

Unfortunately Vista ain't that operating system.....

Not a Luddite, just need something that works properly!

Just out of interest, what software do you have that's incompatible?

Just buy an MS Technet Plus subscription and you can have XP from that

Most Dells can be configured with XP, set it up with Vista Business and opt for the XP downgrade licence. You can configure all Vostros with this on their site, and most others just by telephone. The topic crops up constantly, a search on the forum will help you further.

XP will have extended support until 2012.

Would also be interested to know what software is incompatible with Vista.

When I bought my Dell 2 years ago just before Vista came out I had a "free Vista upgrade" as part of the package.

When I got the free upgrade disc I delayed putting Vista on my machine because so many people shout about how crap Vista is and how slow it is. Well eventually I did it and I am now very happy I did, easily as good as XP.

Before I did the upgrade I asked on a forum whether I should do it or not... I had loads of people saying not to and they were all in the "i've never actually tried vista (recently) but a friend of a friends, aunties, butchers, son said it was rubbish"

Vista with the most recent updates is fine (on a suitable machine which a new one should be).

We buy Fugitsu Siemens machines for our customers and they all come with a Vista Business to Xp Proffesional Roll back licence key.

All software can be run in Windows Xp SP 2 compatibility mode in Vista, so you shouldnt have any compaibility problems. If the setting isnt changed then you may well have problems running Xp software in vista.

Just right click the program, then settings, then compatibility.

A really good point about the 'rumours' :)

I ran Vista from pre-beta in late 2006 and the early experience was a little flaky it has to be said. However, At the point when I finally switched from Vista to Windows 7 a couple of months ago the experience was excellent - I'm a gamer who plays at least 10 recent games, I use USB phones, a webcam, card readers, cameras, a wireless dongle - all from different vendors without having to go looking for a single driver.

So in response to the original post - I'd be sure there really are issues with your particular bits of software rather than just believing some of the hype.
