Today i,ve had a quote of £1450 to supply and fit 40m2 of Karndean Knights Tile, this also includes the laying of plywood.

Can anyone say if this is an ok quote, I 'm in Ayrshire.
  • We were originally going to put down Karndean or Amtico flooring in our modernised kitchen/dining/utility room but were put off by the price. (Your quote of around £36 per sq. metre seems about average from memory. I believe that, with fitting, plywood and good quality tiles, the costs could go up to £70/sq. m.). Yes, it would last 25 years, but that also weighed against it as my OH thought that she might like to change it again before then.

In the end we settled for a vinyl flooring (called something like Leoland?). A bit like Rhinofloor but slightly cheaper. It should last 10 or 15 years or so. People often think we have real ceramic tiles down. At a fraction of the cost of Karndean, the OH can rip it up and lay another when her tastes change again!

We are looking to buy Karndean flooring for our open plan kitchen/livingroom. It is just under 20 sq meters (once we've subtracted the floor space taken up by the kitchen units).

We've been quoted in the £1650 range to supply and fit from a local retailer!!

As a 'moneysaver', I did an internet search and found that to supply it, I would need 6 packs and it would come out to around £440 (including VAT and shipping) for just the supply. Of course this does not include the glue and prep work, such as levelling our concrete floor.

But anyone can see that there is a huge difference between £440 and £1650!!!

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend someone to fit Karndean. My husband and I do try some DIY (tiling, painting, plastering, fitting skirting boards, etc) but something like this seems like a much more complicated job.

Any suggestions on how to go about finding a fitter? Or, if the average weekend DIYer could tackle this job?

    Thanks!

  • i fitted the karndean knight tiles myself in our kitchen.just make sure you do your prep well.i used thier glue and applicator. just dont be too generous with the glue, because if it squeezes up through the seams you need to get it off asap.
i have never layed a floor before,i took my time an i am very pleased with the result, but i think if it was a big room i would get in the professionals.

i have finally found a supplier(storey carpets) who do karndean which i have now decided to buy it looks really impresive down in the showroom

A19 tiles over in peterlee (next to the Catapliar factory) have a good display of karndean.
I was lucky enough to get my tiles from ebay (bathroom and downstair loo different) for around £30 all in!
I was quoted that wounderful figure of £200 labour by a couple of people so decided that all I would loose would be £30.
I went to A19 tiles and spent about 45 minutes asking questions. I bought the glue, applicator and cleaning kit from them along with design strips.
There was absolutly no problems doing it myself, I just did a dry run then layed out all the bits in the other room, applied the glue and then pushed the tiles down into the glue. I did use more glue than it says on the tin running short on the last 4 tiles.
6 months later it all still looks fantastic and even when it's freezing downstairs the loo floor does not feel cold at all, almost like underfloor heating to be honest.
Lets get this straight. Say my house is worth £100K, it drops £20K and I complain but I should not complain when I actually pay £200K via a mortgage:rolleyes:

Can anyone tell me of the benefits in using this flooring rather than ceramic tiles?
  • Warm underfoot

    Look like tiles.
    Harder to damage.

Well I've just received a estimate from my local dealer to supply & fit Karndean Van Gogh Grandewood + underlay in my second bedroom. The estimate is for a 5.5 metre sq room was...

    £2,200:eek:

Do you think they mis-read the measurements & quoted for a 55 metre sq room? or do they just not want the job?

I'm going for a lie down now!

You'd be better off buying the flooring direct then getting a local fitter to lay it. I've used

several times then had a local fitter to lay it.
