Obviously not Genuine VAG but almost certainly made in the same factory. GSF car parts, the place to go for VAG. They can sell me a genuine VAG marked oil filter for £3.50. How much would that be at the dealership or indeed,an indie garage?jeannieblue wrote: »Top quality parts then.............
VW parts are not that expensive and personally, I would have got a kit from them. But its your car.
I do check my cambelt regularly. The car is 1992,done nearly 100k,runs as smooth as silk because i look after it. Sadly body is rusting a bit here and there but it owes me nothing. Bought it for 7k when it was three years old,had over 13 years motoring. Best car ive ever had. always serviced it myself. also fitted recent new front pads..cost £12
Quote from VAG for cambelt was £230,local indie £150, Me,,half a days sweat and £220 -
Well for the age of car - I guess I don't blame you. I'm a bit fussy and like to check out the quality of the parts.Obviously not Genuine VAG but almost certainly made in the same factory. I've heard of certain places obtaining genuine boxes of good pattern and genuine parts and the contents being not what they seem. Always good to look for part numbers and maker stamps etc.
Apparently the box can be perfectly legal............ made in etc., by etc., but contents don't necessarily contain genuine.
Just a warning folks.Genie

jean jeanie, i use gsf for vw belts, they sell dayco belt kits, at first i was a bit dubious, but they seem pretty good and last well, but i have seen some tensioners fail when they get just over service life so do remember to change it again if you keep the car long enough....work permit granted!0

Yes i was wondering what your opinion might be GS. My golf had a new belt (no tensioner) at about 45 k. Done by VAG as car pretty new then. Just done it myself at 91k with the GSF kit. Old belt looked ok visually, tensioner looked ok with a very merest hint of roughness when rotating. Still well lubed. Changed it all anyway. Those hex head screws are pesky on VW pullys etc.goldspanners wrote: »jean jeanie, i use gsf for vw belts, they sell dayco belt kits, at first i was a bit dubious, but they seem pretty good and last well, but i have seen some tensioners fail when they get just over service life so do remember to change it again if you keep the car long enough.0 -
Yep,,my very trusty Maestro q1300 used to have a pushrod engine. Even better !Chains new? They were how they used to be built before the accountants took over.
This does surprise me that so many of these chains are "stretching" it makes you wonder if their is a design flaw or crap materials.0 -

I bought a renault clio on Sunday, X reg, 16 valve 1.4.
Took it for a spin Tuesday, covered a grand total of 15 miles and the cam belt snapped...
Private seller, no warranty. dam bad luck.0 -
I didn't say that company had dodgy bits - I'm not going to name anyone but you have to be very careful.goldspanners wrote: »jean jeanie, i use gsf for vw belts, they sell dayco belt kits, at first i was a bit dubious, but they seem pretty good and last well, but i have seen some tensioners fail when they get just over service life so do remember to change it again if you keep the car long enough.
