It is not easy to get a visa.

I'm half American and even I had to jump through a lot of hoops to get my American work visa when I was over there.

As for citizenship - forget it. My neighbor over there was married to his German wife and even had two children with her - and yet she still wasn't given citizenship. Which was completely bizarre to me, if they had two kids it obviously wasn't a fake marriage, and she had a very good job and came from a good family. If you are skilled in something ridiculously unusual that 99% of Americans would not be able to do as well as you then you would have a chance, but no offense, that's pretty unlikely.

You should be able to get a visitor's visa I would imagine however, which I believe is six months. But obviously you wouldn't be able to work, etc. It IS possible for you to get a temporary work visa but you would have to have someone already willing to hire you over there - I'm not sure how that would work with your plans to own your own business, sorry.

Even when you're driving across the border as a Canadian citizen you can't mention anything about working! Trust me I used to import from USA to Canada and I've been through the interrogations (although I was fine because I was not conducting business inside the USA, just buying merchandise). The US Border Agents will just send you right back home again if they think you are any kind of threat to American jobs.

If you don't have relatives to sponsor you - you either need to be a very highly skilled worker that is in demand, and can find an employer to sponsor you. However in a recession this is very difficult. Your best chance is working for a multinational corporation and have them transfer you.

It is a bit easier if you are a Canadian or Mexican national as you can get a TN1 temporary visa, but that doesn't allow you to settle.

Keep in mind it isn't all that easy to get into this country either, at least from outside the EU - so fair is fair. My partner had to provide a lot of evidence that we had a relationship for more than two years.

It's funny, isn't it - America is a nation built on immigration, and pretty much everyone there has roots outside the country, yet someone somewhere has decided a 'closed door' policy is now best. Hmmm.
