    I've just got a 3 year L-1 Visa.
This is for an inter-company transfer.

I'm in a management position and have been with my company 10 years. This normally means a quick turnaround (2 weeks).
It took nearly 3 months to get it as the Immigration people kept asking for more supporting evidence.

With the economic climate they're making it harder to get in. Added to the fact that Obama added a few more obstacles when he came in to power I guess the only thing I can say is "Good luck!!"

Emigrating to the US aint easy you can't just decide you fancy it and go which is what your post suggests by the look of it.

True, although if you're from Northern Ireland (but not the rest of the UK) you can enter the annual international lottery to win a green card and a new life in the US for you and your family. Perhaps the most bizarre immigration system ever invented but cute none the less. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Permanent_Resident_Card#Green_card_lottery)
  • It amazes me that with our close relationship with the states UK born people can't enter the visa lottery.

Northern Ireland born folk can enter the lottery as can other UK born people who obtain another citizenship.

Apparently the idea of the lottery is to increase the diversity of the US people - but as Ireland is in the lottery and 99.9999999% of Americans have Irish ancestry you suspect that political concerns are getting in the way
  • Ok are you engaged to an American?
Do you have a child who is already an American citizen?
Does your employer want you to go to America to work for them?
Do you have a lot of money to invest in a US business?

If you can't answer yes to 1 of those questions im lead to believe you have next to no chance of being allowed to emigrate to the states

    This is simply not true.

That's precisely the point: countries that already send a large number of people to the US (over 50000 per year) are automatically ineligible. The 'lottery' scheme is designed to promote diversity, and there's no need for it if there are already enough of a particular section of society.

That's exactly what I was saying. I'm asking about the visitor's 6 month visa (and for those who assumed I'm going to be getting a job asap....I'm not planning on doing that, I'm setting up my own business....which I'd obviously only intend to make profit from in America if I decided that I was going to apply for citizenship - I understand as a visitor I'm still not allowed to make a profit from ANYTHING). So...it's bull because I could still have a chance of getting the visitors visa, even if I couldn't get the citizenship for ages.

I'm just a little confused by the alien citizen visas and all the other ones.

So if I marry this guy, I'm still not allowed to go and live with him? That seems pretty silly.

Meh. Haven't put much thought into this post because people are generally not being helpful. (Thanks to those who are and take the time to read and understand :o) I'm wanting to move over so I can be with my partner and have babies with him. Yay. That's my ambition in life.

Not automatically, no. You still need to get the right visa.

I'm American and my husband is Norwegian and there was so much BS and forms to fill out if i wanted to bring hi to the US that we both decided it would be a wholeeeeeeeee lot easier for me to just stay in Norway (which it surely was) BUT with Obama in office who knows how the visa terms will be a year from now...
