In addition to Pinks link (try saying that really fast ten times!) this thread should also help as should eggs - best to keep in the fridge?
I keep eggs for weeks and weeks at room temperature and they are fine. Do the egg test if it helps you feel better

Eggs aren't sold refrigerated to I imagine they'd be fine. I keep horseradish in the fridge as it has cream in (some of them anyway), mayo obviously (though this will be ok for a few days) and opened jars of pickles and jam (tends to get mould as we don't eat a lot) but all sauces like ketchup and brown sauce stay in the cupboard.June Grocery Challenge £493.33/£500 July £/£500

Hi everyone,
It is with humble deference that I've made my way over here, I'm not usually very old-style, it has to be said. I have been relying a lot on ready-meals and frozen food recently.:o
However - my fridge-freezer has broken:eek:
I'm just cooking for me, but would love some tips and advice from you guys as to what I can do while I'm saving up for a repair or replacement.
I have started stocking up with some basic tinned food, I'm getting a bit frustrated with the milk situation though.
Perhaps I'll start saving money, and get better at meal planning again ( I used to do that, but have got lazy.)
Thanks everyone!

have you tried looking for one of those mini fridges? they used to be very popular, im sure many people (including me!) have one lurking unused somewhere around the house. it could do for your milk until you get a proper fridge.<insert super cool inspirational sig here>0

If your workplace won't lend you theirs you might be able to pick up a mini-fridge or even a full sized one on Freegle/ Freecycle. Even if it was a stop-gap, you could make do until you had funds for what you wanted then freecycle it back again. HTH.
Oh, you could use powdered milk (I lived 3 years in a bedsit with no fridge) but I can't stand the taste.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I'd second a try on Freecycle - amazing what people have squirrelled away. I remember when we had our first fridge ever - I was about 11 I think - before that, seem to recall Mum keeping bottles of milk in a bowl of water on the larder shelf, covered with a tea towel, the ends of which were in the water. The water crept up and the milk stayed cool! Mind you, we had a daily milk delivery so not needed to be kept more than 24 hours. I have done something similar, putting butter etc in a closed plastic box and keeping that in the bowl, with cold water coming up the sides. Short term, OK....I'd be getting on Freecycle now, I think!!Resolution:

Freecycle is definitely a good idea
This thread has been updated recently and discusses the very same thing. We also have this thread which may help
ill merge this later

Thanks so much for merging this in with the thread!! Hadn't realised I wasn't the only "fridgeless one!!!" :rotfl:It's good to have some company. By the way, I'd remembered about putting my milk in a bowl of cold water and it works! Fortunately the water runs out very cold from the tap, so it does for overnight even.
Thanks everyone!
I'll cach up now with the other comments on the thread.
