It's version 7.5. I think a newer OS migt be on the cards....

Still haven't sorted Paypal, but presumably as I've not answered their request for my CC details I should still be safe?? I feel such a numpty - I'm so careful about fake emails but when it's a URL you've typed yourself you think it'll be OK...

I suggest you dump AVG ASAP and switch to Avast Antivirus (the Home edn is free). This is supported under W98, unlike Avira, which is the usual favourite free AV recommended round here. This will not make your machine totally secure, but certainly more secure than using AVG. It also gives you some limited firewall protection.

If the OP's OH is addicted to obsolete technology, then a USB modem is more likely. She hasn't mentioned a router as far as I can see.

She's mentioned trying it on her husband's pc though.

Many thanks for all your help. I'll be able to use a PC at work tomorrow anyway, so can try getting in to Paypal then and see what happens....
So were you able to access your account OK through the work PC or not?

I thought there was only one PC here-the one running W98?

Many thanks - I've installed it. It found 4 "gators" (whatever they are) which I've removed, and lots of cookies, which I've left. No spyware detected; does this sound as if I'm safe?

Didn't manage to get on another PC today after all, but will phone Paypal tomorrow to try to get to the bottom of the matter.

SFAIK the only way to send you to a phishing site if you typed the url is to hijack your DNS or the easier option of storing a host file. I'm pretty much certain that spyware doesn't get that nasty and it would be a virus to blame.

So you've either got a virus which may well be smart enough to evade a checker as it is already present or you were getting to the real PayPal site and they are really asking some questions about your credit card. The most certain way to check that is by using a different PC to access PayPal to see if the questions still get asked.

You seem to be pretty relaxed about this and probably rightly so - your CC account would have been maxed out already when this first happened so rushing now won't do much good even if your account was compromised.
