The ignorance of people in debt amazes me to be honest.
You have no idea. Come back in 20 years when you have a little more experience of life and families.
Theres some good people out there struggling, lets see what life deals you. Its not always about finances. Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.

Justamum has put it very politely.
Lots of people who end up using their overdraft have ended up by no fault of their own in situations where money is suddenly short, and they can't afford even long term to save or get out of debt that quickly.
One person on this thread has already given an example which you clearly have not been able to understand.
Just because someone offers a conflicting opinion please don't resort to accusing other posters of 'not being able to understand'.

I do have a tight food budget, or as tight as it's possible to get. Maybe it's because we don't have the budget supermarkets, or decent 'whoopsies' - our supermarket seems to think they are doing you a favour if they chop 10p off something which is out of date - but I honestly don't see how anybody can eat healthily on £1 a day. We do without other stuff like clothes, outings, holidays etc because we have food down as low as I can get it.
Not sure what your climate is like there, or even if you have a garden but it might be worth a try, if you have some time (or even better if someone can help you!).
I would love to grow stuff, and might do a little (did some last year), but this bloomin back of mine just seems to put a spanner in the works. I have heard many positive stories of how helpful it can be.
As I said, just a thought.Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Local authorities over here are now having to offer allotments. I will be getting one, but they won't be available until at least November apparently.
I have got a few potatoes growing in the back in bags, have planted some peas and lettuce and have some strawberry plants growing. I've also got some tomato and pepper seeds trying to grow. However I am keeping a separate list to see if it's actually cost-effective growing stuff this way - cost of compost, pots, seeds etc, versus the actual yield which I will weigh and cost up at prices current at the time. It will be much cheaper when the allotment comes along I'm sure. I've yet to see if I have green fingers though!
I 'chitted' a load of seed potatoes because I was expecting the allotments to be allocated in time for this growing season, so I still have a few which I haven't planted out yet. I'm not too sure if it's going to be worth the cost of buying more bags of compost to grow them
I'm sure the landlord won't be too pleased if I dug up the lawn to grow veg!0 -
Worth asking him though, if you did want to grow more.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

Oh well I'm one of the irresponsible ones then! Have been made redundant from my part time job. My partner has had to change job and go from being weekly paid to 4 weekly with 2 weeks notice, we have children to feed and shoes to buy (dd1 has a huge hole in her school shoes) so this month I have used my entire OD limit (£500). If they recall it then we are screwed. Am intending to pay it back £50 month when oh gets paid in a couple of weeks.
People who say it's easy to save should try living in an area where the only jobs on offer are min wage. My oh works 14 hour days sometimes and we struggle. Are thinking of selling our car next but who wants a 15 year old car tho?0 -

Situations like this do not make us fools or "irresponsible", they are elements out of our control, just do what is best for you and your family.Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0 -

I hope things pick up for you. It sounds like you are going through a very tough time.0 -

Using your O/D in times of need and planning to pay it back, as you seem to be, shows you are not just 'willy nilly' using it and constantly living in it either. You are not irresponsible, just having it really difficult right now, as a lot of people are. Some people have brought some of it on themselves (we all know they are out there) but it does not sound like you are one of those! I hope nothing bad happens with the O/D in the short term and that things pick up for your family. I have heard horror stories of what DD's can do with shoes so hope you manage to find a pair with steel reinforcements lol (joke, sorry!).
As for saving, perhaps it is a mindset thing, I have always saved something, a little, even from my Saturday job as a student and even now as a SAHM with a low paid hubby. The savings are there for emergencies and get used, but I try to put even something away. I am not a rich person who has bags of money, it is just that saving something is high up my priority list. I don't mean to offend anyone, it is just something that is important to me and I think this thread overall has reflected that there is a need for more (sensible) financial education. Not say you personally need this anymore than me or the next guy, but just in general.Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.
