BMW X5 - an automobile often used by rich clueless mums to take their kids to school. These trips typically consist of less than one mile. As a result they can often be found at 8.30am and 3.15pm parked up on the "keep clear" zig zag markings outside schools.

If you are looking at X5's the tax should not worry you are all ready accepting that your fuel bill will be 3 times more than it needs to be and the depreaciation of a stone.

I take it from your post you've never actually driven/been in an x5?

My FIL's gets much better mpg than my car. Fair enough his is diesel and mine is petrol but his mpg are still a fair bit better.

Also, depreciation of a stone? Are you kidding me?
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Dont forget to take into account even though they may be cheap(er) to purchase then they used to be they will still have the same running costs as a £40K car / 4x4 if it brakes its going to be expencive and it will be a world of differance in tyre costs etc compaired to your vectra.

The dream of ownership can soon turn into a nigthmare if you havent researched common maintenance costs and items that have a history of failing. Do some research before buying with the heart and hating with your wallet.

this is the exact reason why i wouldnt have one, buying the parts for something like this would be enough to scare me,imagine MOT time, it needs pads discs alround and a set of tyres, if you cant do the brakes yourself then your probably looking at a bill with not much change of a grand, you cant really skimp with low quality parts on a car like this.then theres servicing time, again if you cant do it yourself then servicing wont be cheap.

Been in an X5 and driven an X3 1000's of miles 3 liter petrol auto, gets 20mpg if driven hard in sport mode and 30 if you drive like a monk on the motorway. 24mpg seems to be average, thats based on the onboard computer readout.

53% loss over 3 years is like a stone in my book! on a 50k car!

We've got one in at the moment..................

I would really advise against one of these blasted vehicles! They are absolutely nothing but trouble.

We are having to do work on this vehicle that should really not have to be done considering its age........... the bill has reached nearly £900 so far and we still have more to do to get it roadworthy. And we are not a dealership, so labour rates are reasonable.

It came in about 18 months ago with turbo probs etc - and the bill then was over a grand. Plus the in between servicing..........

Buy one at your own risk - but be prepared for big bills.

They are not what you would expect from BMW. And don't look at the Mercedes either - they are as bad, if not worse...
