It's the eternal question old low miles, or newer higher? probably makes a difference what you are plannning to do with it how many miles and how many years are you going to keep it?

Watch out for it being clocked you want some evidence of the milage being genuine.

ok i will level with you all the car itself is not a must im not going off roading well i will be going up hills.lol. but it is the car of my dreams have always wanted one so just want to treat myself, it will be used for around 10,000 miles a year i will be used for to and from work kids dogs the norm or so called norm.

lol, you can hardly compare the depreciation of a vectra to that of a BMW X5.

However, i can sympathise, i paid £14k for my Ford Titanium X '06, when it was one year old, it's worth about the same as your Vectra now!!

sorry was not trying to compare lol im sat here giggling to myself now lol. glad you understood what i ment though:D

Don't be silly, the motorway mpg of an X5 is hardly 3x an average car, and depreciation is nothing like as bad as you suggest.

I did not say average, the car tax issue is really small beer compared to other costs of running an X5, Polo Blue motion vs a X5 4.8 looks like MPG is 3 times worse to me! I have no problem with people having such cars but to hide from the real costs is silly.

    RUNNING COSTS
    Town mpg 57.6 16.7
Out of Town mpg 88.3 30.7
    Average mpg 74.3 23.5
    % value retained (3yrs/36,000mls) 47% 34%

Im only looking at the 3.0 se not the 4.8

Ok so if you are going to keep for 1 or 2 years I would go for the older lower mileage so when you do sell the mileage is still low (below 80k) if you are planning to keep for long (5years) a newer one that have had the mileage run on to it fast and has a full dealer service history execpting that its not going to worth alot when you do sell.

On the tax remember that the top band only applies to cars registered after march 06 so one from feb 06 is better than one from april.

    Petrol or diesel?
Assuming petrol 3.0i here is how tax disk charges shape up in future, depends on registration date of car, a 54 plate tops out at £245 in the next few years.
As said by others, tax disk a drop in the ocean of money spend on total cost of ownership of these things.

I would be more converned about how the X5 you are considering has been used. Are the older low milers school buses spending all their time around town?
Are the younger higher milers spending their life on the motorway.
I would favour an avergage mileage younger car that has had open road drving over an older lower mileage X5.

I confess to being a BMW fan and owner, but the X3 and X5 don't make sense to me, get a 5 series if you want something that size, if you want a 4x4 get a Land Rover Defender or a Toyota Land Cruiser.

Wheres the fun in that I thorght this was your dream car! nothing quite like a big car getting to 60 in under 7 seconds.

    Petrol or diesel?

Have you considered the X3 get one with the sport body kit and it even looks good.

Dont forget to take into account even though they may be cheap(er) to purchase then they used to be they will still have the same running costs as a £40K car / 4x4 if it brakes its going to be expencive and it will be a world of differance in tyre costs etc compaired to your vectra.

The dream of ownership can soon turn into a nigthmare if you havent researched common maintenance costs and items that have a history of failing. Do some research before buying with the heart and hating with your wallet.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

Why don't they do the XDrive 3 and 5 series in this country? spose it would really kill X3/5 sales.
