A virtual drive won't work - you need to boot directly from the disc itself, otherwise it'll just be running on Windows rather than in its stead.0 -

dam it, hmmm any ideas where the problem originates??
and those pc cards, i was wondering, surely if its a software issue on windows part, then adding a usb pc card wont work either?Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -
I'm sorry I haven't a clue... and the idea of spending money on something that may or may not work just grates.
As a last resort, you could try Kubuntu and see if your brother notices. It looks a bit like Windows, after all.0 -
I have a couple of problem USB ports on my laptop. I have to move and twist the connection carefully until there is a light on the device. For instance my optic mouse does not light up. If all devices, including a mouse do not work, then it suggests a hardware problem.0

cool! thats what i hated about ubuntu, no matter what i did i could never get it to look right, and mean, windows is by no standards the best gui but its the only os where you get enough software free to chop and change everything to my liking.
anyways ill give it a go! thanks alot.
By the way, i assume that booting from a live disk is similar to booting to a drive partition in the fact that he wouldn't have his software on it, and what about all his data? would that be accessible?Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -
have you tried uninstalling the usb root hubs in device manager (then rebooting and letting windows detect them again)?0
