i considered that as ive had some experience with my own laptop but its only a 40gb hard drive, and theres only an os partition and my brother doesnt want to lose data.
Hes making this issue rather difficult i know.....
thats why i came to here, for fixes that dont require reinstalling xp or putting other os's on it etc...

ExpressCard slots are found exclusively in new laptops, so even if he did buy one of those it probably wouldn't fit.4743hudsonj wrote: »...hes too tight to buy an £11 express card...

a live cd doesnt need installing, you run linux from the cd meaning that it doesnt touch the data on the HDD unless you install it4743hudsonj wrote: »i considered that as ive had some experience with my own laptop but its only a 40gb hard drive, and theres only an os partition and my brother doesnt want to lose data.

The usual means of acquiring a live CD involves downloading a disc image and plopping it on a CD-R, but you can also order an Ubuntu disc from Canonical for free, or even buy one.0

i like free lol, so does my brother but it will take ages, you can only request 9.04 which doesnt come out till may, then u have to wait up to 10 weeks.

if you download an ISO image of ubuntu from the link above, you will need to burn it to a cd using something like imgburn0 -
thats what i figured, i realised this laptop does have cd-r capabilities, took me a few mins before i found an iso that it would let me download but doing that now, do i just write the iso as it is and put it in?? and just to check, it wont affect xp in any way will it?
ps. as an after thought can i mount the image on a virtual drive and use it like that?
