I have noticed alot of people talking about it so I thought I would start a whole topic about it. If you dont already know about it, Windows Vista will be Microsoft's Next release of Windows.
Some of the new key features are:

Something else you might notice is that their are not just Home and Porfessional versions, I think there are 3 Home versions and 2 Professional/Business/Enterprise versions
Some of the new key features are:
- One version for 32 and 64 bit CPU's
- Capable computers will benefit from "Areo Glass" providing 3D graphics for day to day use like opening files etc.
- Tighter Security! Incredible new features to improve security that even Linux will be a little scared of.
- Desktop Sidebar
- Internet Explorer 7 which is also available for XP (currently in Beta 2)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie7/default.mspx - More advanced networking features
- New backup features and improvements to System Restore
- Completely redesigned Windows Explorer
- Some features like an updates to the Alt+Tab program switching, it is now similar to Mac's Expose (a little useless)
- Redesigned Start Menu and Taskbar
- Better Search Feature
- And alot more

Lol, yeah I read there are something like 6 versions, very confusing.
- Starter
- Ultimate
- Pro
- Basic
- Enterprise
- Business
It does sound impressive though, especially some of the security aspects.
- UAC (User Account Control) is reminisant of Linux, in that users won't have admin priviledges (everyone using XP generally does), and to make any important changes, an admin password is required.
- Integrated anti-spyware, and an improved two way firewall.
- Internet Explorer 7 which'll be better than having 6 sat on your machine (I'm an Opera user anyway)
It should hopefully make things nice and lean again, as apps integrated will hopefully be decent. Should cut down on the number of extra applications one has to install. I do wish they'd mirror Linux with the online repositories where you can select within Linux what apps you want installed. It just saves having to go to websites and downloading things.
I can imagine a lot of people being overly paranoid. It should be a nice step up from XP, I'd maybe wait a few months after release date though before upgrading."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
I am a bit of a techno freak, im getting it the day its released, along with a new shiny computer :-)0

Interesting info, however as my PCs are critical to work, I wouldn't touch any new Windows OS for at least a year after it's been released.
Should be good for home users to test out though!

There's a beta version lurking on some unmentionalbe sites and it looks quite nice. Can't remember which site I read it, but someone had a legit beta and had posted a whole series of screengrabs showing what it looked like.
Don't think I'll bother with it for a while though, there's nothing on it that I can't live without. IE7 is just Firefox, only not as good. By the time IE7's out, Mozilla will have updated Firefox so it'll STILL be better!
AND it'll probably be far too expensive for anyone to actually buy. Which is a shame really as, if it were affordable more people would be willing to upgrade to it legaly. Bill Gates does himself no favours!0 -
Have you actually got IE 7 because if you did you wouldn't be saying Firefox is better, I have both and IE 7 is incredible. Including a Phishing Filter and an RSS Reader, Windows Live Toolbar also fits right in with it including an enhanced Desktop Search program. You can also have multiple Home Pages with the tabs, but each browser has its own strenghts.0

You can get those extras in Firefox as extenions. I dont trust MS for security, they fail miserably and are always a target for rif raff0

Thats true but if everyone switched to Firefox that would start getting more and more holes found in it, as virus writer and hackers would start targeting Firefox as more people use it. I agree with you but you've gotta hand it to Microsoft, they do a good job seeing that their software is the most targeted. Macs dont have many Holes because the core OS is based on 20 year old software and linux is not targeted because only a small fraction of the whole IT market use it. The more people that use the software the more of a target it becomes.0

Apart from the stupidly large system requirements I don't fancy having to upgrade my monitor etc. to watch moviesThey promised the earth...and delivered mud. Technically though it did meet the spec.0
