    Thanks baldhead. It just said phone was not restricted but still says sim rejected. Does that mean the phone is unlocked but some issue with my sim? Sorry for all the trouble.

    Ah that will be the reason then ... total klutz :). Shame, as it would have been ideal to use whilst I renovate my house ... less stress if it ended up in a bucket of plaster. Oh well, thanks for all your help.
