My Audi had no oil in it!

Maybe the burning smell was the oil pouring out of somewhere, like onto the exhaust. This would explain why there was no oil in the thing.
I always tell customers to check tyres, lights and levels every week or every time they wash it off.
6 Cylinder Audi's use a bit more oil than normal stuff. But not as much with the 4 pot ones.0 -

As my earlier post then, once or twice a year.0 -
vw/audi are pretty shoddy, everyone will tell you that they are wonderful but i would get rid0

I think the OP is right to be concerned. She bought an approved Aufi from an audi dealership. She should expect that it has been serviced and checked as per the agreement.
As for checking oil...there should be no expectation on the part of the purchaser that it would be necessary to check oil levels three weeks downline from service. The comment about checking oil in audi/vw regularly diesnt ring true.
For comparison, i have a VW Golf which is 17 years old and done nearly 100k miles. When i change the oil, it stays there until next time it needs changing. It doesnt leak and it doesnt burn oil and the level stays the same.
My major concern would be that the engine has run for a period with low/no oil and may have sustained damage/wear especially to the OHCs,followers and valve train since these bits are most vulnerable.
Where did the oil go? is there a leak? did someone leave the sump plug loose? Is there oil on the OPs driveway? What do Audi say re the missing oil?0 -
I stand to be corrected but i believe Tdi engines combust a certain amount of oil by design to provide turbo lubrication. A litre per thousand miles sounds a lot to me but what do i know..curlyfairy wrote: »I check my oil weekly,it uses about 1 litre per 1000 miles (96 a4 tdi).I would be surprised if the TT had no oil in it.I think there is either a problem (any oil on the floor where its parked or around the engine bay?) or someone at the garage screwed up.As others have said i would have checked the oil personally.Have a word with the garage and see what they say regarding the issue, maybe they will give you a free service next time or an extra warranty on the engine?Maybe worth an ask.
Hope you get it sorted.

Sounds like the 110 Point check consisted of a greasemonkey with a pasty on one hand and a biro in the other ticking off a list in the canteen.
There is no way that car should be anything other than topline after 3weeks of ownership on an 57 car.
Why are pople implying it's somehow normal for a car to lose a sumpful of oil in 3wks??

...cos maybe something was left undone or someone has been fiddling with the car over night outside the OP's house...?0

i cant believe people are saying you shouldnt need to check the oil, madness
i check mine all the time, its vital to do it to prevent long term damage, if the op had checked it the day they got it, non of this would of been an issue0 -

Thats about right mate,i've read various forums that state roughly the same and also my neighbour who is an Audi mechanic says thats ok as you say due to the turbo lubrication.0 -
Does your car lose a lot of oil, or does it need topping up daily.
Mine never lose any, so I rarely check them anymore. Maybe once or twice a year.
Mikey,
Of my 3 cars, the 2 Vauxhalls have never needed topping up. The Beemer is a turbodiesel and burns about 1/2 litre in between services (15k). But checking regularly will catch if something is amiss. If the OP had possibly checked her oil after 1 week then she might have noticed a drop in oil level and possibly prevented further damage.
I make the checks for my own piece of mind and because I don't want to spend 3 hours on an A Road waiting for recovery when 15 seconds of check could have prevented it.The man without a signature.0
