I went into my local Tesco today and for the first time the cashier gave me back two of my 4 coupons saying 'we can only take 2 coupons if you don't actually buy the product and you haven't brought any'
    Is this right??

considering there is always some wording on the coupon that basically says you have to buy the product to use the coupon im surprised they didnt refuse them all . i personally never use a coupon unless im buying the product .

Yes, there is, we all know that - it says 'please don't attempt to use this coupon...blah blah...to avoid embarrassment when refused at the checkout' (or words to that effect).

But...Tesco and Waitrose choose to accept coupons at the checkout anyway, overriding and ignoring the t&cs. I am not saying it's right but it's been this way for many years and it's their choice to continue to do so - and my choice to pay this way because they say I can.

If they said you could pay with 10 used bus tickets, or a fiver (your choice) would you still insist on giving them the fiver if you had the bus tickets in your pocket...?

There's no fraud committed by the customer because we are just using acceptable tender as per the Supermarket's policy - how they then reclaim the money on that tender is their business IMHO. It's their risk because they are the ones redeeming the coupons against 'general sales levels' rather than specific purchases.

In my local Extra I didn't even have to fight to get the policy followed - a few calm chats with the Till Manager and Supervisor about 3 years ago clarified the position. Luckily one of them knew the policy so I was on to a winner straight away there.

BTW I don't ever use self-scan and I don't use any moc they cannot reclaim the money back on (except loss-leaders like a spend & save voucher).
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

  • :eek:I went in to my local tesco today and as usual used about £9 worth of coupons, the team leader (who is one of the usually dodgy ones who scrutinises EVERYTHING...she wouldn't let me use two 25p shreddies coupons even though one was for regular shreddies and one was for honey-nut shreddies, different product duuuuuurrrrr) said 'oh the policy will be changing soon'.

I thought oh great. i've come to quite rely on this through these tough financial times and it'd be a shame if tesco stopped doing this and altered their policy because some people really abuse it.

plus as someone else said, tesco get a handling fee for coupons they process like 2p or something, that adds up to a lot nationwide doesn't it!!!!

it does get on my nerves when people 'make up' their own versions of the policy when you go to them, whereas others are well-informed and know the policy well. why they can't just educate all their staff to the same level is beyond me.

i was being scrutinised with my coupons at the customer service desk, and overheard one senior member of staff on there saying that she thought using coupons like this was 'theft'.

made my blood boil!!!!!!!!!!!! how can it be theft when there is a whole policy created to support this happening? what a !!!!!!! cow!!!

I wouldn't be surprised if they do change their general policy because of all the abuse thats been going on though, they did it over their policy of returning an item because of being overcharged and being able to keep the product and get your money back as someone spotted an overcharge of about 2p on some xboxes and everyone went nuts getting their free xboxes and money back, then they changed it. I didn't hear about it til about a year afterwards but i bet a lot of people thought all their christmases had come at once!!!!!!
    Won't buy nuffink without a discount :p
  • i don't like using self-service much either because i figure i'd rather have a living being telling me what i'm doing is ok rather than a machine!!!

went to my tescos today and they wouldn't accept the 2 (and only) coupons I had for items I was not buying. There must have been a change in policy - never had a problem before. Not been a serial abuser, but occasionally have tried with no problems

OH and I have done four small shops between us this weekend in different stores and had 100% of our in date, non store specific, non duplicated coupons accepted.
I really don't think a change in policy nationwide is happening - it could just be that some stores have been victim to shoppers using coupons they can't redeem and are being cautious.
  • dO THE COUPONS WORK ON THE SELF SCAN TILLS OR DOES A BEEPER GO OFF AND ATTRACT ALL AND SUNDRY THEN YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR SOMEONE TO VOID IT?
