Tescos policy nationwide is that they accept non store specific coupons that are in date if they stock the product. You can use one of each coupon if you haven't bought the item and an additional one of each coupon for any items you actually purchase. Acceptance of internet coupons is at the discretion of store Mangers and there is no limit to the number or amount of coupons that a customer may use.

Taking vouchers when you have not bought the item is at the discretion of the manager. Nation policy or not.

my local don't take any vouchers unless you have bought the item.

    Yours

I always sneak loads of coupons through at a time through the self scanner at tesco! The SA allows it, as she just stands there approving the coupons as I do it

if you are buying a birds eye/felix roasted item then yes anywhere will accept them but if your not buying the item then im not sure who will accept them but i know sainsburys will only accept coupons for which you have bought the item

Thanks. I will be buying the Birds Eye/Felix products. It has never crossed my mind to even try and use them as money off for something else. I didn't even know you could, anywhere.

BTW, to sylvester, yes, if you look at the 'coupons as cash' thread you will find that only Waitrose or Tesco should take your money off coupons for Birds Eye and Felix Roasted (as long as they are in date and they don't state another Supermarket in the t&cs). You don't have to buy the products but best to choose a large store as most smaller stores may not have come across a couponer before (so it could be more hassle for you).

Here's the link to the 'coupons as cash' thread:

Excellent. Thanks for the info and link. I should have used the coupons before, but for some reason had never done so. Should help with a few pence here and there.

No, no, they really don't. ;) The coupon policy would soon be unsustainable if every customer used coupons!

The fact is, for the unsure posters above, that the version posted above by Mouschka IS the national policy and Tesco DO accept coupons if you don't buy the product. To anyone whose store doesn't allow coupons, I wonder why you haven't taken it higher?

I had to write to my local Store manager 2 years ago, after suffering terrible accusatory treatment by one or two Supervisors who didn't have a clue about the policy. I was completely fed up with being marched off to the CS desk and Managers gathering around me, even though I carried a copy of the actual policy and could prove what I was saying to them. I simply carried a copy of the policy as posted on the first page of the printable coupons sticky thread - it is the real thing and there's no reason why customers shouldn't know it.

After receiving my letter (which was not worded as a complaint BTW) the SM told the Supervisors that he had checked and I was right. Since then, the policy was followed -and still is. Some of the staff hated me I'm sure (the grouchy Supervisors because I had gone over their heads) but many, many more of them congratulated me on standing my ground as it meant THEY could now use their coupons too! :D

Thank you for this post, i think I will write a letter marked "Private and confidential, to be opened by addressee only" to my local manager asking him to confirm the national policy and referring to the folder mentioned by Maroushka in her post, I have been wasting my time talking to supervisors....I suppose I am just a bit reluctant in case I get an unfavourable answer and put the store on alert and they then brief all the cashiers effectively, whereas at the moment they are so disorganised I hope I will still find cashiers who will accept lots of coupons....

That's exactly what I did. I started with a compliment about one of the nicer Supervisors who did know the coupon policy, then politely queried why I was suffering such embarrassment at the checkout when other Supervisors were very rude to me because they did not know the policy. Helpfully(!), I enclosed a copy of the policy copied & pasted from the printable coupons thread...and waited for his reply. At no point did I 'ask what the coupon policy is' - in fact I politely told them what the coupon policy is!

Like you I wondered for a long while about whether to write, in case it caused them to look at the issue and confirm a restricted policy of 10% or something in that store. Like you I sometimes got a nice cashier...but it was so hit and miss it made me feel horribly nervous every time which is stupid when you are just a Mum doing your family's food shopping! I really wanted to use the store as it's my local and is on the way to/from work, so I didn't just want to give up on them without one last try at getting them onside regarding coupons.

At the end of the day I decided their repeated rudeness was unacceptable. I would rather know where I stood than keep feeling nervous every time I approached the till, never knowing if I would have to suffer yet another dressing down by some jumped-up Tesco megalomaniac.

Like I said before, it worked in my case. If the SM had replied that he had decided they would only accept one coupon then I would have accepted that - and I would have voted with my feet and stuck with the Extra further away.

Either way I would escape the hassle and rudeness so it was a win-win situation for me.

I find, if you try to pay for all your shopping with coupons, they're going to question it. But if you just hand over a few pounds of coupons at the end, they won't even query whether you've bought the items. Especially if you've packed everything away and there is a queue.

Obviously if you just buy a pack butter and try to pay with a coupon for washing powder, you're going to draw their attention!

Thanks for this. Tried this for the first time today with only 2 coupons as didn't have any others gocat and cheese. Bought neither and the nice cashier just said lets see if they work. Was chuffed with my meager 80p off my £24 shopping. Can see a new obsession brewing! I have already sussed out the cashier that I would never try it with!
