Oil level indicator gadget?

How do you know how much oil is in your tank? I am sure there is numerous gadgets for this but which ones are actually accurate? Which ones would you recommend and which ones are worthless?

Assuming you are talking about heating oil tanks, the best thing is a sight tube on the side of the tank, checked weekly or so.

If you really want a remote device, we've got a Titan Watchman - a small plug in box gives a single digit display of the level in the tank, between 0 and 9. A remote battery powered sender attaches to the dedicated fixing on Titan tanks.

Not sure if they're worth the money, but it works ok - until the battery runs out on the tank sender...

... and you can't help checking the sight tube now and again... :rolleyes2

As paul said, most have a sight gauge on them, a length of clear plastic with a button on the bottom, when the oil level is low then you top up.

    Hi Jo4,

You just need to find a Heat Centre / Heating Spares place - I rang the people I get my oil from and they suggested a couple of places. The sight gauge was £7.95 inc. VAT.

Just wish I could afford the oil so it served a purpose :o

Well TBH I got my trusty brother-in-law to do it... the original one had just snapped off, so it was just a case of unscrewing it and screwing the new one on. Make sure the button (there is a pull-out knob to read the gauge) is pushed IN, otherwise oil will escape when the original gauge is taken off.

But if you're not just replacing one...then you need the advice of someone who knows more about these things than me (not difficult)!

You might need to get the part with the pull-out knob on too - probably a bit more than £8!!

I will phone the company tomorrow which I got the tank from, which is the same company as I get my oil from. THANKS for all your help!
