Hi glenneash,
Pre-payment meters would normally be fitted in a property if the customer has not paid the bills.
The debt would then be set on the meter and paid back at a low weekly amount.
Being disconnected is a very last resort. Have you been offered a pre-payment meter?
If you are eligible for help, you should speak to the caring energy department at E.ON.

Hi
We have tried to get E-on to place us on a lower tariff but they will not while there are arrears -so we are in a catch 22 situation. Is there any way around this
Thanks0 -
Hi flo5,
You can change tariff at any time, sometimes there may be a cancellation fee to pay, but it doesn't matter if there is a debit or not.
It does sound like you have been given the wrong information, what tariff did you want to change to/from?

flo5 if you have a pre-payment meter with a debt on this is different, but there may still be options.

Hi
We are with e.on and recently I discovered we owe £1,200 for usage apparantly. I have been on top of the bills until they began to be increased regularly last year. I cannot sustain the amount the want me to pay monthly so currently have cancelled my DD this month. They are asking over £200 a month, a jump from £122 a month which I have been struggling to find at the neglect of other priorty bills!
I rang e.on last week and asked them if they could reduce my DD to whateve my current actual usage is and offered to pay extra off my account weekly via a payment book or card at the post office. Sadly I was told this was not possible to do and all I was offered was to re-instate my DD at the new amount of over £200 a month! Made me feel as though they just dont listen or the computer doesnt comply with such enquieries!
We just cannot figure out where all the gas and electricity is going. I have done an energy suvey over the telephone with e.on and they couldnt help either as we already use energy saving lightbulbs, have cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and double glazing. Out hob is gas, cooker electric fan (so no need to pre-heat). Almost all the boxes were ticked and those that wernt have now been met where possible.
Our bungalow is always naturally too hot in summer and we only use the central heating in the harshest of winter months and have electric heater on 'anti-frost' setting the rest of the time to keep the bungalow above freezing. The property is small enough to rely on just 1 heater for this. We put on jumpers etc or use microwave heat bags if there is not cold enough for the heating to go on.
We do use a tumble dryer in the winter but only if it has been raining for days on end and the dirty washing is piling up, the rest of the time we use the washing line and go in an out like yo-yo's dodging the rain!
We have a plug in meter that tells us what appliance uses what electricity but we cannot understand it, and beleive me I have tried to understand it and the instructions but no help there!
I am concerned as we have no DD in place at the moment and although I have just cancelled it I dont really want to as it mens I will fall further into debt.
I see there are people in a similar situation and wonder what they have managed to sort out and if they have any advice?
Thanks

Crisp£note: I don't think you're clear about how the DD system works. You should be paying 1/12 of your annual bill monthly. In your case, you also need to clear your debt over a period o time. Paying less than £200 a month will mean that your debt won't clear. You may be able to reduce it slightly so that you can pay off the debt over a longer period of time but you will probably still find it too much. Prepayment meters may be your only option.
How many kwh do you use a day? Post some details - lots of people here to help.0 -
Hi thanks for reply. No you are correct I dont understand - but am trying to.
Please can you tell me what to do to find out how many kwh we use a day? I will then measure it and post results asap.
Thanks

For a few days, read your meters every day at the same time. Post here and we'll try to help. It would also be helpful if you said who was in the house, how you heat hot water and what heating you use over the winter. And anything else apart from the normal domestic items like a fridge, freezer, TV etc.
I'm assuming, as you've contacted your supplier, that they have accurate meter readings?0 -
Crisp £ note could you change to a different tariff, sometimes this can help make some savings.
Also when you spoke to E.ON did they advise you when you were using most of your energy?
It does appear that your payments have been too low to cover the amount of energy that you have used. This is the reason for the debit.
As you have now cancelled your Direct Debit, follow up will start to recover the balance, I'd suggest setting something up to avoid this.
Hope this helps.

Hi Helena
Thanks for your reply.
We pay our gas/elec by direct debit we had been told that there is a cheaper tariff available if as in our case my husband is disabled and on benefits. They told us that they assess (the tarrif) this is based on what we have used over the 3 previous bills. We live in rented accomodation and cannot have a meter as it would break our tenancy agreement.
Our bills have been very high as when we moved we were not advised that the aga (which is very old) uses a great deal of fuel. We now only have it on for part of the day and turn off electrical equipment as much as possible. Have heating on limited times ( not now as weather is getting warmer) .
What should I ask for?
