The bloke mucked you around and it was on the cards that he would refuse a mutual as well. Don't post the ID here as it will show who you are as well and that is not a good idea.
Unfortunately by doing the mutual the very thing Steve warned about has happened. As far as ebay are concerned you were the one who wanted to cancel as you sent the mutual, they have no need to reply at all now. I did assume since he claimed he could not afford full price he would be happy to cancel, and therefore not get any sort of strike, how stupid am i?

Buyers might not want to pay but they seem to hate confirming a mutual as well.

Yes the only way to stop a buyer from leaving feedback is to go through the full NPB dispute without the buyer responding.
