Options
Hiya , having a major problem atm have a contract with 3 atm paying £40 am month , I have a nokia n95 it recently started acting dodgy activating apps on it's own and basically going mental rining people on it's own , sent it off and went to pick up from 3 shop to be told there was water damage to phone as such not covered under warranty and they would'nt reapir even if i paid repair costs now I swear on my daughters life I did not spill anything on it but he he said condensation can cause it etc in that case where can I feasibly take my phone without it being at risk of this and the smarmy get said well you should have taken insurance out blah blah then I said does he have customer complaints line and he said there is no point complaining etc anyway did phone up and whinge got nowhere as I expected so I decided to get one of my old mobiles unlocked and put sim in it so could use my minutes & texts im paying for , my partner took it to somewhere that unlocks them and he was told it cannot be unlocked to 3 as 3 block their sim cards so they cannot be used in any other phone ? is this true else im gonna have to fork out for a new phone

Thanks in advance for any replies.

  • You could try taking the N95 to a Nokia care centre for a 2nd opinion, it will still be covered under the Nokia warranty. You should be able to use your 3 Sim in another phone, as long as it is a 3g phone, they dont like you putting their sim cards in 2G only phones.

Three phones cannot be unlocked BUT the sim card will work in other unlocked phones.

Richard James im afraid your wrong, it WONT still be covered under Nokias warranty if you take it to a Nokia store, Its Nokias warranty that is saying no to the repair in the 1st place, the networks only act on behalf of guidelines set out by the manufacturers.

Ok, it may not be covered under warranty if it is water damage, but there is no harm in going direct to a Nokia Care centre and asking for a 2nd opinion, in case 3 are 'fobbing' him off.

The N95 can be unlocked and used on any network, any unlocking shop that has a laptop and the correct cable can do this, usually for £10, or you can request the unlock code direct from three, think this costs £20, and they are obliged to give you this regardless of what they say.

If you know the phone is not water damaged you can try re installing the firmware, or even removing the crippling 3 software that they put on their phones, just Google "debrand my N95" or click here and i will do it for you: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Debrand+my+N95

  • thanks all it is not the Nokia I want to unlock as it is still broken , it is an orange payg i bought last year , the guy said he can not unlock it because 3 put block on sim so it cannot be used in an unlocked phone , I did try one of those sites for a code and they are refunding me cause they cannot generate one

Ah i see, sorry thought it was the phone you wanted unlocked, im pretty sure a three sim card has to go in a 3G phone for it to work.

After a bit of research it appears it will work in a 2g phone but is against threes T&C, you shouldnt have a problem making and recieving calls, and also texts but internet would be a problem, however the SIMs are no different to other 3G SIM cards other than that they will switch to Orange/O2 (whoever their roaming partner is these days) when there isn't a 3UK signal.

if you do use a 2g phone you will be constantly roaming with a 3UK SIM onto Orange/O2, you will find that your SIM is eventually black listed as this costs Three.

3 don't block their SIM cards they work perfectly well in other unlocked phones, but the unlocked phone needs to be 3G capable. What the unlocking place probably meant is that if you use a 3 sim in an 2G phone, 3 are likely to block it.

If your old Orange PAYG phone is a 2G phone, then it's not a good idea to use it.

Tigert is absolutely spot on :-)

Look in the back of your phone (underneath the battery) and check the model number. If it's a KE970 then you have a 2G phone, if it's U970 then it's 3G.
