Hi Marshallka, out of interest what does smoking help with? I only ask because obviously all you hear about are the bad things but I like hearing both sides of every story
some bowel problems, breathing probs when to do with anxiety and also my BP was worse years ago before I smoked (although always been high and its hereditary too) than it is now (although I am medicated for it). I have better lungs (according to tests) than some non smokers but then again I walk a lot and take in fresh air lots. I am not promoting smoking here, it is bad but I have no intention of packing up TBH. My dad did not smoke and he died at 51 of bowel cancer. My friends hubby did not smoke and died of kidney cancer a couple of years ago (54). My BP would certainly be higher without ciggies as i panic too much and have all my life. My mum does not smoke and never has and both me and my sis do. It just goes to show, our parents did not smoke but we have not followed suit. We both do. If i felt ill cause of smoking and could not run etc (I am 44 next week) or was having a permanent chesty cough etc then I would think about it but as yet I am able to do these things and do not feel knackered. I don't smoke heavy though and believe most things in moderation can work. My main problems are all STRESS related.

My nan's dad lived to be a week from 100 (he died in the mid 80's) and my nan always says that he never took any medication (because there wasn't any in the olden days ;)), he smoked 1 cigarette a day (half in the morning, half in the evening), ate a full english breakfast cooked in lard  every day and had a whisky before bed every night.

Each to his own I say.... :T

I have not packed up and will not but my father in law lives in corsica for some of the year and then back here for the other and we get tobacco from abroad and our friend also goes abroad every few weeks. I have never ever bought any bacca from this country and pay about £1.80 a pack of domingo and that lasts me the week. I could never have afforded to smoke if Ihad to buy it from here. I must say I really enjoy a ciggie. I don;t drink or anything else and I keep fairly fittish and my smoking (right or wrong) is something that actually helps with some problems I have (and not just saying that - has been proved). I smoke between 7 and 10 a day:o:o.

Well done to all you quitters.

    That's not too bad Marshallka.;)

I do really miss it though.......:o, do not drink either, apart from maybe a little one xmas or new year lol, but one thing I can say is that food tastes a lot better and my sinus problems don't seem as bad as they used to be, but there are times when I see passers by and feel likt going out there to ask if I can just have one puff lol :o.
7 to 10 a day is not being a heavy smoker really.

My one sister she given up for almost 3 months and just because she put on a little weight she started back up again, I told her just to get to the gym lol, but still I suppose everyone deals with this in a different way.;)

    I agree with Marshallka,

I smoke but only between 5 and 10 a day, sometimes less depending on what kind of day I am having.

I tend to get myself so worked up over things and can get really stressed at times and find that a ciggie can help. I am a natural born worrier

I am surprised when I go to the docs and they tell me that my bp is normal. I feel like saying your machine must be bust

My dad smoked and he died of natural causes. My mam never smoked and she died of cancer

I will never promote smoking but sometimes a ciggie can help

Hiya Mel, I must agree with Marshallka on this one, I suffer with high bp as well and was always told it would get better without a fag, but nope it is in fact higher than before......, my nurse told me to give it some time, she told about those ones you can buy from the chemist you now the plasic ones as shown on tv, but I hear they do not help really, so have gone to chewing gums and now I'm always biting accidentally on the side of my mouth ........ouch........

Hey Marshallka I will be 41 next week........:o, catching up with you then lol, omg 44  I thought you were only my age or a year older, me getting confused again.

It doesn't surprise me about the blood pressure being higher without..my mum always says that if she weren't so stressed she would be able to stop anytime.

Oooh..I could deal with the pain of biting my cheek if it wasn't for the mouth ulcers that spring up the next day lol

    Yes it is difficult.

That is it Mel, when I do bite the side of my cheek it then causes ulcers lol :o:D.

My dad is an ex coal miner, yes he did smoke as well, he did give his fags up, and his breathing got worse, when he was in his 40's he was diagnosed with Emphysema, he is on the oxygen concentrator permanent now, a huge box by the side of his bed was installed a few years ago, and he also has the oxygen cylinders as well, also nebuliser.
And got over prostate cancer as well.

Yet mum and one of my younger sister both had "B Cancer" never smoked etc, so it just goes to show that smoking does not cause anything.

My aunt was 99 when she died and smoked at least 60 a day at least, she was a chain smoker more or less, she gave up smoking when she was 98 and had a year without smoking.
And remember many years ago they started smoking from a very young age, some were just age 5 from what I have been reading........
