Aviva seems good value but more weakness to follow I guess.
Yup, but that and much more seems to be priced in. I know that sky-high yield can't hold, but even half of that would be nice. Not convinced on Amlin though, it took very big hits this year on various global...earthquakes, tornadoes etc. so not just a kneejerk reaction on weak financial markets.
I bought Amlin as a good price during one of the August dips, so have only taken a few minor hit so far. It's a hold for the foreseeable future.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

I pushed the button on Aviva and am now in at an average of 355p. That's it for a while as I only have £1.5k in my trading account as the (hopefully!) bargains recently have been too much to resist. Divis during Sept and Oct will add several hundred more to this, and I'm sure I'll have my eye on something else by then.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. Thanks for the advice. I already have an account with Interactive Investor (II) as I've made a couple of small purchases in investment trusts recently (SMT and TEM). II also have a regular investment option, but, unfortunately, this is changing next month so that trades only take place on one day of the month.gadgetmind wrote: »I pushed the button on Aviva and am now in at an average of 355p.0 -
I also made a small purchase of AV before the ex-div... already thinking the money would have been better spent elsewhere!
Here is some advice for you. And me. Stop looking!I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Yeah that's probably best as, until there is some news that changes my view of AV, I don't intend to sell. Just can't quite ignore the feeling that a lot of people know something I don't!0 -
The +/- market volatility has been great over the past few weeks for some good ultrashort punts. As mentioned before, my favorite is FXP and it's turned me a 35%+ gain in the past few weeks by jumping in & out, but mostly due to equities generally heading south in China (which I expect to continue). It's also been helped by the drop in GBP V US$. I expect some more fun on this one. There is a pleasure in the pathless woods, There is a rapture on the lonely shore, There is society, where none intrudes, By the deep sea, and music in its roar: I love not man the less, but Nature more...0

IKWYM. Insurance and banking seem to have default/collapse of Greece, Spain, and all of the French banks priced in, and much more. Is this realistic? Maybe, but I decided it was worth a punt with 10% of my portfolio as the remaining 90% is FUBAR given this worst case anyway.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. Its possible because of how government backs the system.
If suddenly they cant afford to do that like Lehmans maybe then you get a nasty dose of real market dynamics like sunlight with a hangover or something.
Its not that a real market is bad just its a shock now. Hence all these spikes as we alternate between free money and more realistic dynamics
Market can still go up, I do wonder when though
VED was down 13% today! Thats for an Indian based company, if 70% of India is relying on selling to 1bn Indians why should they even care about 300m USA people
They should drop 70% slower I reckon but commodities always do this, it can rise 10% in one day tooIt's nearly xmas 2011 you know, the fifth since we were told it would all be over by christmas.

I thought ultrashort meant it couldnt really be held but the chart for that looks ok, still I think its a day trading tool mostly ie. be greedy
Is Rio a buy StevieJ ? I remember you had this one, I prefer BHP but the PE for Rio is 5 now
Yet today stocks crash and bonds rise. Maybe you get your bond money back in ten years and with 1.7% interest and maybe inflation is above 1.7% the whole time anyway. The world is crazy
Going to buy tomorrow, can someone recommend me a good Gold or miners fund for my SIPP ? I closed out my tech fund on the high yesterday luckily so looking to make good at least one transaction this swing down.
I have to decide tonight
TEM is recommended by Questor by the way, it is invested in China a fair bit I think0
