I had something of a roller coaster ride with Autonomy yesterday and today. I have shares in this and was a bit concerned when it started to drop rapidly yesterday so I opened up a short position as a hedge. Just look what happened today following release of trading results (I decided to close the short just after they came out this morning, turned out a good decision!). Quite a volatile stock really!

  • wow, I read the ft article earlier but didnt check the price.
I was thinking this is probably a buying opportunity this reads like but that depends on their timetable, etc

Maybe alot of people shorted them and it kick started things

Volatile little stock TB, long and short at the same time, I assume you are trading two different accounts.

I am comfortable with my own feelings, thoughts, predictions, guesses (not saying I always get it right), but its just getting over this psycological 'thing', which I know is irrational and having been through a number of in and out decisions over a number of years you'd think I'd have it understood / controlled by now - BUT apparently not.
If you are comfortable with your analysis, such that acting on your conclusions produces a positive expectancy then you simply need to establish a set of rules to act upon relative to those conclusions, aka a trading plan as mentioned in STT's post, and most importantly follow them religiously. This will remove the emotional aspect from your decision making.

As far as getting it right all the time, don't let that worry you, no-one does, losing trades are as much a part of trading as winning ones are, in as much as we always have them, that is what stops are for. Also never forget that choosing not to take a trade is also a decision, if your analysis does not produce a firm conclusion to enter one side or the other, then the appropriate action is to do nothing, often trading is as much about patience and restraint as it is about making great calls.

It's not something I generally do. Just got my shares on the one hand which are more for the medium/long term and spreadbetting or CFD's for any sort of quick trades.

TT, I agree with your post, absolutely. The thing that is annoying me is that I thought I had mastered (for want of a word) my psychological side of things, i.e. decide on the plan and stick to it but obviously not.

Its annoying because I can see whats happening and I know what I should be doing but.......

Sweet ;) I've come across people who play range trades like that in less volatile stocks, not sure how successful it is.

LOL cloud_dog, by nature we are a species plagued by emotion, it is a battle we are constantly locked in, the best we can hope for is to keep it in check most of the time.
