Bookie - if it comes to it - turn the water off at the stopcock. Fill a kettle and some pans first so you can have a coffee and flush the loo.

I had an overflowing overflow once (Len - stop before you start!) and it was the valve/arm on the ballcock in the tank. It had seized/broken and so it was stuck up/down (can't remember which) so the tank just filled and filled and used the overflow to stop it going over the top of the tank.

Have you had the ballcock checked???? If it is that, it is a 10 minute job and the cost of a little part and the time.

BB I was going to suggest the same thing. Ours plays up all the time although if I remember Bookies had hot water running out of it?
