I know that remark was tongue in cheek, however my sister who is a teacher does yap on about how it's good news when people have children as that helps safeguard her future. Some brats she has taught in the past now come back at the weekends to break in, wreck the place and steal computers. Oh the irony!!!!

If education was private you know only too well that teachers would be paid a lot less.
There is a surplus of teachers in Northern Ireland so it follows that if demand exceeds supply, the price is too high. Unfortunately, politicians lack the backbone to take the necessary action.
I'm glad you appreciate your privileged position.
If you are made redundant, will it be a genuine redundancy or will you just be getting your pension early?

Private teachers in England get paid extremely well.

Very genuine redundancy!! I'm only in my early thirties!

There is no scheme now for teachers to go early and get their enhanced pensions. Also, retired teachers not really allowed to sub any more (which is 100% in my opinion - should never have been allowed).

Demand does indeed exceed supply, but they will turn out the usual hundreds of teachers this year...and then all the people (like me) who trained and worked in England and then came home. I do think though that there is no excuse for young teachers to be unemployed or casually subbing in Northern Ireland - plenty of jobs in England to get the experience.

Why Oh why did this turn into "bash the teacher" thread?
    So predictable and unnecessary IMO.

Nolan- now there is someone who is overpayed for the 'job' he does. I don't know what he earns, but I suspect it is a rather large amount of our money and whatever it is IMO it is too much.

    And why not?

They don't get enough bashings these days! IMHO
They do a PGCE and think they've got the right to structure kids lives overnight.

The OP'er has every right to question the amount of money they earn, I wish I could earn that sort of money and sit around for umpteen weeks of the year doing sod all.

I don't think that (most of us anyway!) we believe that we have got this right. A school day needs structure and a classroom needs structure - and kids actually prefer this! How will kids learn if they can just do what they want or if there is no order? What about those kids who have no structure at home and only get it in school? Our best attenders are the worst behaved kids / those from very difficult backgrounds!

Yes the holiday are great - nobody's going to deny that. If they change it then so be it - after all they are agricultural holidays in an industrial / service economy. I'm not going to feel guilty about them though - not my fault!!
