    Too much, almost certainly.

I don't think anyone could be paid 'too much' for babysitting other people's children. Which, effectively, is what a lot of teachers and head teachers spend their time doing these days, instead of teaching children (which is ultimately their job).

and No I could NEVER ask how much she earns as she would never discuss such issues with me! ..
    ......
I know I am nosy but I am really interested in finding out...

If you can find a scale + find out her experience and find out the number of years worked then you could make an educated guess
    - unless you ask her -thats exactly what it would be -a guess.

Why on earth do you want to know?

I understand why you might ask this but i do have a legitimate reason for asking and so what if it does seem a bit nosy!!

I am really fed up with a family member always saying that they have very little money when in realty they earn more than three times what we do!! :( and always demand to go to expensive restaurants and take little consideration of our circumstances.

Why can't people be more open and honest when it comes to what they earn!!

So thanks to all who have so helpfully contributed here; it has been most enlightening. :A

That is always the way, people who claim they are broke are usually loaded!
I will stop there or I may type something I later regret:mad:

    Thanks for the explanation

Sorry but I do not see any reason why they should be frank and truthful about what they earn, unless you are promised a certain percentage of their income every month.

Otherwise why should anyone tell anyone else their income.Perhaps they may be afraid that others may ask them for loans or even worse for some money gratis!

Gosh you are way off mark, ............in a million years we would NEVER ask anyone, especially then for a loan, and we manage just fine as it is.

I really don't like your attitude.. . :rotfl: so you are saying that you wouldn't get a bit fed up (to put it politely) that a member of your OH's family would find it acceptable to continually say that they had no money, and yet insist on all family members, us included, going to extremely expensive restaurants and giving large amounts eg. £250 as presents for family members.

I think you would feel the same way that I do!!

I am just quite interested in what they would earn that's all, especially as we ( my OH and I) have always been very open re all of our money matters.

I can sympathise - this used to happen in my family too. I've learned to just do my own thing and let the pushier and more well off members of the family do theirs.

The thing is that while no, the other person is under no obligation to disclose their salary to anyone, they do have the same moral obligation that we all have to treat the rest of their family with dignity and respect. This includes not pricing them out of the joint family entertainment.

Another great trick I've come across - and this has happened with friends, not family - is to go out for a meal, order vast quantities of alcohol and the most expensive meals and then suggest the bill is divided equally. It takes a bit of guts to say no if you're the person who has only drunk water and eaten pasta!

The same principle applies though, thoughtlessness and selfishness equals a lack of respect for others.

There seems to be a implicit code of conduct among those like your sister-in-law who live well at taxpayers' expense to pretend that they are only modestly paid in spite of the terrible "stresses" and demands of their employment. They do this all the time in the media and gullible Joe Public believes them. That's why you hear the type of people who call the Nolan programme forever saying that our doctors, nurses, teachers, policemen, ambulance drivers etc all do a 'wonderful' job and can't be paid enough.
This is why these groups have the bare-faced cheek to make big pay demands even in present circumstances.
But when you're overpaid and your livelihood is not under the slightest threat , it's hard to resist a bit of ostentatious spending now and again which is where your problem arises.
If you're not living off the state yourself, you could try to make her feel guilty about it.

At taxpayer's expense? Who else is going to pay us? Everyone for private education? Education for the rich and everyone else can go to hell. Very 19th Century of you.

You'll find that most teachers realise they are pretty well paid and do not complain. Don't think I'm overpaid, but certainly not underpaid either. I certainly know how lucky I am - although plenty of us are getting made redundant as well. I'm on a redundancy notice at the moment!
