WARNING! Credit cards especially NatWest

One thing we are always being told by just about every financial expert on TV is that when you pay with a Credit card your purchase is protected. What were NOT told is that if you pay off your card at the end of every month then this Credit card becomes a Charge card and your goods are NOT protected. We found this out to our cost when we bought a Kitchen from MFI on our NatWest 'Mastercard'.

This is the line that Natwest is giving us should anyone know different then make a comment.

No mate, under s.75 of the CCA you can claim a chargeback and the card you have within its name and terms will clearly be called a natwest Classic Credit Card or similar - not a Charge Card. Charge Cards are Amex, Diners, etc etc - certainly not Natwest Mastercard.

I'd speak to lawyer if you are unsure but they are talking crap!

...unless, of course, you have a NatWest MasterCard Charge Card.

Otherwise, even if you pay your balance in full and on time every month, it is a credit card, and they are bullsh!tting you.

Avoid the phone. Make all communication in writing. Then you have evidence of their responses.

Use this letter to make a claim.

A card that MUST be paid off at the end of every month is a charge card and not covered by Section 75.

A credit card that happens to be paid off at the end of every month does not magically become a charge card, and IS covered by Section 75.

You either have a charge card or Natwest are lying to you. I'd make sure of the former before doing anything about the latter.

Credit card companies are renowned for “massaging the truth” when it come to the s.75 rules. I guess a lot of people back down after the company says they aren’t covered.

Assuming it’s a true credit card (not a must-be-paid-monthly thing), and the amount is question is at least £100 and less than £30,000 (which seems likely) you ARE covered. Contact them again and tell them you would like to make a CCA s75 claim and ask what they require from you.

(If my understanding is correct, unfortunately they can get away with it - you can only make a complaint about them to the FOS if you raise it with them first and they don't satisfy you. It's a loophole that the companies use to do dogdy things, safe in the knowledge that they can backdown if the customer chalenges them, with almost no repercusions.)
