Hi all - please excuse my ignorance here but is bicarbonate of soda the same as baking powder please?

I have a yukky flask that needs cleaning & I only have baking powder in.

    Thanks, Tracy.
  • I agree with the rice and cold water and bicarb idea, I saw Kim and Aggie do it on a crystal vase and it worked really well, if you shook it well it would probably achieve the same in the flask!
:D**Thanks to everyone on here for hints, tips and advice!**:D

  • I use (and don't laugh!) coke. It will literally shift anything, how it's safe to drink I have no idea. Just fill it up with the cheap stuff. Leave overnight then rinse out. Always does the trick for me.

I use sterident* in mine! Works a treat, just pop in one capsule and some water and leave for an hour. Also good for kettles and toilets.

*disclaimer I am only 31 and don't need sterident for anything other than cleaning!

Oh gosh, no one has suggested what I do! hot water and washing powder, leave to soak and then a good rince. It works with a flask and tea pot.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.

as little uns we used to clean pennies with coke (or tomato sauce). ;)

as we got older we did an experiment to see how harsh coke was by leaving some chewed chewing gum in a glass of it - it dissolves! a very good cleaning aid i use too! :D
  • I know this is slightly OT and excuse my ignorance but how long will a flask keep water hot for? I've been flitting about the OS forum like mad since I discovered it last week and I've noticed that many of you put excess boiled water in a flask to save boiling the kettle again for another cuppa! Don't know why I never thought of that cos I sure like my cuppas and as a convert to OS moneysaving I think the flask thing would be :j.

    Thanks for any replies :D

Hiya, I have a 2 mug steel flask, It gets filled @ 7.30 with coffee and then I take it to work. I have the coffee on my tea break @ 9.30am and then again for lunch which could be 12 - 1pm or 1 - 2 pm and it is still hot.
Soooo 7.30 - 2pm is 6 - 7 hours. Wile out all day I also drink a litre of fruit squash from a plastic bottle. Julie

  • 'Cold water and rice in a rabbit water bottle that has gone green does the same thing BTW.'

I would like to thank the poster for this tip. I tried it last night and it works in seconds! Previously I was always having to replace green bottles! :T
  • I too use the cold water and rice trick in the flask I use for university - best cleaning tip I was ever given with regards to flasks
