    No its not.

But we're shooting in the dark. It's happened to me on three occasions, one where I spent an unusual amount over the course of a long weekend, one where I thought I'd made the repayment but forgot:p and once when their computer system wasn't working and thousands of people couldn't use their cards.

There is no way we can know why the card is suspended, but it will probably be easy to rectify.

And yeah, it is pretty common for credit cards to be suspended.

Yes some banks (Barlcays and Lloyds are main ones) that have a daily limit for purchases. If this is the case then its best to withdraw cash and then make big purchase.

I bought a new car using maestro and at the point of sale in the ford garage the machine read 'ring for authorisation' at which point the garage rung a number they have and they had to put me on phone to answer security and they said they could decline payment as my limit was 750 not 18 grand.

I told em to bollox as it was my money and as it was electronic the banking code clearly says I can spend it all without notice. Anyway, they authorised the payment and changed my daily limit from 750 to 3k as I do spend lareg amounts. Owt after 3k always goes for authorisation.

Its a safe guard thats all.
well i dont know about lloyds but almost a year ago i put £1000 on my debit card for my TV :D which was obviously coming from my current account and i didnt have to authorise that transaction and that was by far the biggest spend i've ever had on my card and i mean by like at least £700.

But no i know about the ins and outs of having to manually process a card transaction. It Sucks. Not just for the customer but for the person processing the transaction as it can take upto 10 mins to verify the card hold is the card holder.

Yes, it is now common for all cards to be suspened and the reason why? To protect us the cardholder because we have, believe it or not, become more and more lax with our attitude toward securing our cards.

Its life and unfortunately, its a small price to have to pass verification to reactivate your card. At the end of the day it doesn't mean you've been naughty - just that the bank think something isn't quite right.

Now, lets flip the coin - assume you know you're going to make a large purchase, pointless ringing up and letting the bank know cos they can't do anything until the point of sale. So its a no win situation to an extent....

The bank have to protect themselves too I guess, at the end of the day it is their money.

Exactly, they don't like doing it - we don't like it so why do it? Obviously to protect both us and the bank. That dept cannot generate an income so it is a loss department anyway, the only way to justify it is the savings made from fraudulent POS transactions.....

Only half my limit used and never missed a payment so why have they suspended my account? Had 4 transactions at 2 garden centres over weekend but surely they wouldn't regard that as unusual on a bank holiday weekend????? Hardly going to be Russian gangsters is it???? Glad i checked my account online and didn't have the card refused in a long line in tescos! This sound normal to anyone?

These kinds of services have automated "pattern matching" to the patterns of purchases typically seen in fraud and something in your spending pattern triggered it. Simple as. Automated systems don't know anything about garden centres and bank holidays but they do know a lot about spotting patterns they've been told to look for.

My bank do it to me every now and again when I manage to trigger their pattern matching. Sure its a pain, but not as much as getting ripped off by fraudsters would be.

Thats what i've been explaining, some banks do it at point of sale others will ring you later - especially if they are smaller amounts that maybe went under the stores floor limit......

seems logical that it is nothing to worry about, just need s aquick call to the lender. :j
