They voted against it because they felt that because they are blind or visually impaired, none of them drive, so therefore don't need designated spaces. They forget that the landlord has invited in sighjted partners. What annoyed me was the other driver on site, who has a space in the staff carpark, her partner voted against it as well.

    Well you've got two choices.
    Put up or move.

    It seems unfair.

So what is the worst they can do if you park in a visitors pace?

The primary tenants seem to be blind people in need of on-site workers. The majority of tenants need those staff to come on site, they (their vote) and the charity have decided the best way to ensure this is to provide staff parking, the rent is paying the up keep of the car park to ensure this. The majority of tenants need the staff on site but have no need for someone's partner to drive - thus is sounds like the teants needs are being put first.

If on-street parking is so difficult that you are not prepared to use it - it suggests there is a real need for designated staff parking to ensure it is viable to get staff and to ensure the local community does not get annoyed and object to such specialised housing because staff are parking on-street.

Being able to drive and park on-site doesn't affect how you do your job but for shift workers at odd hours it may affect whether they will work at a location or elsewhere.

Why can't you use public transport or park off site?

Nobody that works here do shift work. They either start work at 9am and if they are on all night they start at 2pm. If they start at 9 am they finish at either 2pm or 4pm, so there is no issue with travel at late hours.

There is no off street parking in the area. If I had to park off site it would take me 5 minutes to walk back to my property.

I do use public transport as much as i can, but as i have medical problems myself, I have to drive to get to my hospital appointments.

I also have a young toddler, so it is harder for me to park further away.

The other issue is also the fact that another tenant has designated parking, so therefore it is discriminating not to offer the same to other tenants.

I would class staring at 2pm & working nights as shift work.

If you want guaranteed parking, then the only way is to buy a house with a drive.

I think I have to agree with Clutton. I came on here for some support and advice. This is a very stressful time for me at the moment and my health is suffering because of it. I now have the backing of higher authorities and will be seeking advice from them.

I will not be coming onto this site anymore as I have found a lot of people on here very rude.

Would you not stop & think that maybe you are setting yourself up for a fall DEMANDING a space?

Your attitude that the staff should give up their space for you is not doing you any favours.

Your DH is blind but there is nothing stopping you letting him out on your doorstep & then you going & parking a little bit away. Lots of people do this, with children too.

To be honest, I think many of the original answers were sensible and sympathetic. If their advice does not fit in with your opinion of how you imagine the situation should be resolved, or that you are unable or unwilling to follow their advice, it does not make them 'rude'.

Our landlord is a well known charity and I find it appalling that they put the needs of their staff before the needs of their tenants. They advertise that sighted people are welcome and yet this is how we are treated.
It was put to a vote in a tenants meeting the other night and the tenants voted that a designated parking space for tenants was not needed.

I really took exception to this comment.

They are a charity for the blind, they are not going to fall over backwards to provide facilities for non-blind people are they?

Not giving you a preferential parking space is not treating you badly.
  • Even if AnnieUK75 does get an allocated space, what's the betting it will be wrong because the other person has a space closer to the entrance.

Just because something isn't particularly fair doesn't mean we can do a lot about it.

When I go to visit my Dad's grave it shows that he was 63 when he died. I look at other graves, there are people much older than him when they passed and I think to myself, that isn't fair. I then look at other graves and there are young children that have passed away and I think how lucky Dad was to have had his 63 years.

Its all a matter of perspective. Sometimes I think we should try to be happy with what we have already got. Things could be a lot worse for each of us.

You actually got perfectly civil advice. It's just not what you wanted to hear. Sorry you think that is rude.

Did you follow up on the advice to see if you could get a designated space in the visitor's car park? Apart from that, whilst it's obviously difficult for you with the toddler and we all sympathise, there's not much you can do.

By the way, you complained about 'discrimination'. I advise not trying to play that card. Discrimination is perfectly legal in this country unless it's on the grounds of race, colour or religion. Even then, it's only illegal in certain circumstances, eg employment.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
