Hi
We recently upgraded from a sky box to a sky+ box and its great, however... its so bl**dy noisey! As long as its switched on, even on standby, it makes constant high-pitched noise. The noise only stops when its switched off at the plug. Its annoying and distracting - its loud enough to hear over the tv. Call me paranoid but i also worry that its damaging me and my kids hearing in some way. My sister has the same problem with hers so Im assuming this is a 'feature' of all sky+ boxes? Is there anything i can do to get rid of the noise?

I'd reckon it's the power supply unit then. I find my Wii does it.0

I had a similar problem with mine when I got a new TV. It was the scart lead that was not properly plugged into the sky box.0

Hello all,
The whistle you can hear from many modern electronic equipments is due to the power supply. The current technology which enables power supplies to be smaller and more efficient uses a high frequency oscillator to convert from mains to the dc required by the electronics.
The noise can be emphasised if components are loose inside the supply or if your hearing happens to be very good at that frequency.0 -
I had this exact same problem when I signed up to Sky+. The problem is the make of the box and the associated design. Despite what Sky may tell you all boxes are NOT the same.
Some boxes have ventilation slots on the top of the box, others do not. More ventilation means the cooling fans do not need to work so hard hence less noise.
After MUCH arguing with Sky (who tried to tell me all the boxes are the same) I managed to get mine changed to an Amstrad box. Problem solved.
It took several calls and a couple of changed boxes to sort this out. It was only visiting a friend who had a perfectly quiet Sky+ box was i then able to call up with the specific model.
Ask for an Amstrad DRX280.
Good luck!0 -
Just to let you know that I got sky to replace the box, they installed a new one that was exactly the same make and model (amstrad) but the high-pitched noise has now GONE!
Horray!0 -
My old sky+ box was the same, I thought it was the hard drive. Got it changed in Jan to a new one with anytime tv function now it seems to make a constant clicking noise. Does anyone know if this is the programmes "dropping in" the anytime tv?
P.s - thats when I get get an un-interupted programme past week has been shocking for interference not sure if its just the high wind or if the box is on the blink, again !0
