Did you keep slowly tapping F8 from startup, (about twice a second does it),sometimes it doesn't quite catch it in time, so try again if necessary.
Did you get to the Configuration page offering the options including Safe Mode, or did it go straight to the error message?
Yes i did this and no it didnt get to the configuration page went straight on to the error page

Look forward to macmans opinion, but I would suggest there is a problem with your boot record if it goes straight to there. Was there sustained disk activity before the crash?

Do you have a Vista CD handy? There is plenty of commands to try using the recovery console to recover from this without using Windows built in "repair Windows" function.

There should be some sort of diagnostic interface you can boot into if it won't start Windows. But without knowing the model, I have no idea how you get to that. Have a look in the manual and see if it tells you.

According to a bit of internet research, holding down the 0 key whilst powering on the laptop and keeping it held down will get you into the utility partition.

Looks like you'll be needing your Vista CD. Hold down the F12 key and choose boot from CD. As you've said your not too good on computers, would not be wise going into more depth repairs of the registry and boot configuration, so probably best to do a startup repair as detailed in this website:

I think you have to make one from within Windows. Sadly you can't do this. However this manual says it defitnitley is to press 0 on startup.
