Mcafee is absolutely awful. Dont use that even if you can obtain it for free
I agree. It's huge and awful.

When it breaks you'll need to remember your McAfee username and password to even attempt to fix it.

What invariably happens is that you uninstall it using the McAfee Removal Tool because it won't uninstall itself when it's broke!

You then stick on one the free antivirus programs and it picks up a bundle of stuff.

Thanks but as someone of relatively limited computer literacy I don't feel up to the challenge of an entire replacement of the OS.

Hee hee. I am also computer illiterate so I use OSX. Simple to use and no fear of malware. But please ignore me. I'm sure it must be easier to mess with AV software than to use an OS that has no need of such.

My wife had a similar argument when I announced that our next car would be an automatic. "Oh, I'll never get used to having no clutch and not having to change gear!" Yeah, right.

And the other argument "oh, automatics are soooo much more expensive - what a rip-off!" didn't wash, either.

Thanks to all those who responded. I already have Avira and I shall be going with Malwarebytes. I assume that there are no issues with the Spybot S&D already in situ..?

Oh wonderful. Tried uninstalling adaware and I get a system message saying "Error 1921. Service 'Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service' could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services."

    What now?

    1. Go to the start menu, click 'Run...' and type 'services.msc'
    2. In the services window, locate 'Ad-Aware Service', select it and
    click 'Stop'

    Cant find run? http://www.xp-vista.com/other/where-is-run-in-windows-vista
