You are very lucky to have some small shops near you. In the past 15 years in my area we have lost 2 butchers, 2 greengrocers a bakery, a post office and a fishmonger and gained 2 curry houses, a chinese takeaway, a tanning salon a mammoth Tescos and a morrisons.

Our nearest butcher is 5 miles away and fishmonger 18 miles

they were probably lost because the locals didnt use them. Use them or lose them as they say.;)

i use tesco online, some times pop in there but prefer sainsburys for extra bits as mine its alot smaller and nearer dd1's school.

though i have now found after checking the prices on the things we use alot that m&s isn't that expensive either (on some things)

We have been getting most of our shopping from Aldi for just over 2 years now and like most of their stuff. The other things that we don't get in Aldi usually come from Asda or Tesco, depending upon who has the best offers on.:D

Im an offers w-h-o-r-e. where i live within easy reach (20 mins drive at the worst of times) is:
    2 Asdas.
    1 Sainbury
    1 Tesco
    1 Netto
    1 Morrison
    3 Lidl
    2 Aldi
    1 Somerfield
2 Decent sized town center Co-ops (plus about 10 smaller co-ops).
2 Independent Asian Supermarkets (i mean supermarkets not corner ships)

So i will buy whichever supermarket pulls me in with offers.

Overall i prefer Aldi for its quality.

Only tryed one of the local Asian supermarkets and i have to say im plesently suprised. Decent prices as you would expect but its very clean. Its in a mixed area where its located and i would say 30%-40% of the customers are non muslims like me. Somewhere i would have never thought i would go but its not bad at all.

Still, overall i go where the offers are.
Hi there! We’ve had to remove your signature. It was so good we removed it because we cannot think of one so good as you had and need to protect others from seeing such a great signature.

Not having a go but have you ever worked out how much money you spend on fuel? Reason I ask is we used to do what you do but came to the realisation that we weren't just spending silly amounts on fuel but also were spending silly amounts of our free time on the pursuit of the best deal.

    Hence why i put:

"where i live within easy reach (20 mins drive at the worst of times)"

Make it a bigger area and the list of supermarkets would be bigger.

Wanna do a search and check it our for yourself?

Im based in Thornhill, Dewsbury and my list is:

2 Asdas. Dewsbury and Wakefield (could include Huddersfield)
1 Sainburys. Dewsbury (within my 20mins i could poss include wakefield, Brighouse, White Rose Center, Huddersfield)
1 Tesco Batley (could include Cleckheaton as well)
    1 Netto (Ravensthorpe)
    1 Morrison (Heckmondwike)
3 Lidl (Dewsbury, Mirfield, Ossett, could include Heckmondwike and 2 at huddersfield)
2 Aldi (Batley, Wakefield could include Huddersfield)
    1 Somerfield (ossett)
2 Decent sized town center Co-ops (plus about 10 smaller co-ops). (Mirfield, Ossett)
2 Independent Asian Supermarkets (i mean supermarkets not corner ships) (Mullaco and the other im not sure of name)

Check the maps. Its not too far to travel.

  • Morrisons
Used to do the Lidi and Aldi thing but then moved onto Asda. Now Morrisons. Never rated Tesco, always found it expensive and even their Finest joints of meat dont compare to Morrisons.
Morrisons cheap offers are easy to find and I have no problems with the quality of any of their products, even their own brand.
And I can fuel up cheap whilst i'm there.

We use their own brand nappies (just had twins) with no problems although the other 2 were raised on Tesco nappies and no problems there either. Milton steralising fluid. 500ml Tesco £1.89. Morrisons? dont do the 500ml, they do the 1.25 litre. £1.89.

That sentence was actually what I was picking up on. A 20 min drive would still equate to a decent amount of fuel, especially if it was several times a week (not to mention a decent amount of time). Like I said, I wasn't having a go because we used to do exactly what you do, but when we sat down and worked it all out it just seemed that we were spending way too much time (and fuel) chasing the best offers. Now we just make a weekly online order from Sainsburys (mostly Basics items) and pay £3.50 delivery. But, of course, what people do is entirely up to them.

I hate these kinds of threads which supermarket do you use as if the supermarket should be your one stop shop for all your groceries.

I use a variety but i also use SMALL shops like a butcher for meat someone who knows his trade and does butchering and other small shops as well.

I used to use my locals in the last place I lived, cos I think money saving has also got to sit well with my moral peace too. But unfortuantely I moved just before xmas 08 to a less than desirable place - well, in fact, its hell on earth but hey ho - that has only one near by shop... 'bargin booze'. :(
Rest assured, once I am able to move out of this hell hole I'll be finding a nice butchers etc. But would still need supermarkets for things like nappies, cleaning products etc.
