Has anyone noticed petrol prices creeping up again?

Don't know about prices.....but some swine decided to demolish the Esso garage just round the corner from me yesterday (no idea what they are planning to build there).
Now I've got to drive to bloomin Morrisons for the stuff. Typical.0 -
1)We have a child of under two where can he go on a bike.
2) my wife works 14 miles away and need to drop the child of to the minders near work.
2) My parents live 14 miles away and no bus routes on a weekend and no train whatsoever.
3) My wifes parent live 25 miles away and no bus or trains at all (not without multiple stops no trains possible at all)
4) how do I travel on holiday.
5) how do I get to meetings.
I am not picking holes in what you do, it is great
but for many in rural areas there is no viable alternative
With my uber-green head on...
1. You can get a seat that fits on the back of a bike to carry a 2 yr old. Mine loves it, and her Duckie helmet. Goes "wheee' down all the hills and keeps shouting 'faster daddy, faster"
2. I cycle 16 miles each way to work, and I'm not very fit (takes about an hour each way), 14 miles isn't impossible.
3. Really no buses at all? I live in a really rural area, and although the bus services are not great at all, they do cover most of the little villages and hamlets at some time of the day.
4. Taxi to Bristol airport (100miles from my house) for four people and luggage is £125 each way. If I went for a fortnight, I reckon the airport parking and petrol to and fro would be not far short of that
5. Walk, bus, taxi, cycle; depends on distance and opportunity.
Those are glib answers, I know, and I do still have a car which we use, but what I am saying is that they are not essential, just convenient for our lifestyles. It would be better if there weren't so many upfront costs that have to be paid for a car. If tax and insurance had to be paid for by the mile, there would be more of an incentive to use other means of transport where possible.
If you don't fancy the cycling, get a 125cc scooter with a topbox. They'll do 100mpg, 65mph and you can get loads of shopping under the seat!0 -

There are cars with worse emissions than 4x4s...
Besides the car is only a small player in the planet / green issue. Dirty factories pump out a lot more co2, but they can't be taxed as highly...0 -

So you don't think that having slagged off the government's policy that asking about the "government in waiting's" policy is a fair question? We know what Brown has done and your reaction to it. As it looks likely that Cameron will be in charge next year what would he do differently? Personally I would be delighted to see the pump price fall. I'll support the 10p cut in duty the Express campaigned for if someone can show me where the money would come from, and guarantee that the reduction in duty wouldn't quickly be wiped out in a rise in the price of crude or profiteering from the retailers.
As currently stated the Tory policy would be to increase tax when the price of oil is low. No definition was put on what "low" is, but its certainly perceived to be there now. And you've just had a long whine on VAT. Are the Tories pledged to reduce the VAT take on fuel? No? So isn't the truth that just as the policy didn't change from Tory to Labour the policy wouldn't change from Labour to Tory? Will you slag them off as loudly? A bad policy is a bad policy surely?0 -

They are good answers...but, of course a cycle/moped, can carry sacks of animal feed, etc etc.
I agree, there is more we can do, but I also agree, cars reamin more convenient in a lot of rurl applications.
I use parking at bristol airpost a bit, and its alway well under that price for us! Mind you, I normally am away for five days or fewer. I pick DH up there, less often now, but twice in the last 5 weeks. Takes I don't know, 30 mins is? by public transport would take forever, bus into bristol for the train, from there a lot longer than the drive to bristol, or bristol airport, usually to late for a train running to us, at night anyway!
One thing I do like about the recession though, is the office seem to be using electronic conferencing more often than flights.0 -

Rochdale. You are taking something I said about "government" and making it partisan, which is why I declined to get involved earlier. I shall decline again.
I wasn't slagging labour off. If I was, please do show me where.0 -
It seems to happen every summer now. If they start hitting ludicrous prices like last summer its going to cause mayhem. Apparently there's a number of oil ships that are strategically sitting in international waters waiting for the prices to rise before they dock and offload their contents to the refineries.
I think i'm going to have to invest in a bike.
I used to work for shell and once worked on a supertanker that was the biggest in the world when built called the lepeta...we used to dock in Kuwait and take it to pulla buckem in Singapore and so often we were told to slow down as the oil prices were rising and the price going up $1pb made them millions..It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.0 -
I know a chap who cycles 36 miles each way to work. 72 miles five days a week. He's a bit extreme though. He lives near Brecon and went out for a walk the other day..... To Prestatyn and back!!0
