Has anyone noticed petrol prices creeping up again?

i use my car for almost all my daily trips --work, shopping etc.
its a reasonably fuel efficient car. and considering more than one person in the car i feel its good value for money. cannot consider cycle as i consider it not safe --no cycle lanes nearby. most of my daily trips are within 5 miles and yes a cycle may be a good option but not considering the family and safety issues.
for long distances i use public transport and no joyrides.0 -

I understand what you're saying. However, chances are that the DVD / Video you're showing them the movie on was probably made in the Far East and imported here, via plane. And the fish you're hitting them with was probably caught hundreds of miles away, flown to a fish freezing depo in Eastern Europe, flown to the UK then taken by road to the Supermarket (which, ironically, was next to a sea that they don't think of using to get their fish).
And there, in one rather stupid paragraph, is why getting an 4x4 is 'bad' for the environment, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't make a blind bit of difference...0 -
And as everyone is giving their transportation methods, I should add that I go everywhere on a hoverboard / skateboard hybrid, like Michael J. Fox's character in 'Back to The Future II'. Zero emissions, looks very cool and I get Huey Lewis and The News playing in the background wherever I go.0

Those of us who live in rural areas with the closest decent shop being at least 5 miles away do need at least one car.
This government is also inclined to tell us to leave our cars at home and to get around on foot and by bike. If you look at the demographics of Labour voters they are mostly in urban areas. Conservative voters are mostly in rural areas. Therefore if you are a Labour voter leaving your car at home mostly applies to you.
Sorry Dealsearcher, I disagree with you. I cycle 6 miles each way to work every day so no, I don't need a car. And I shop by bike and order online. So many people *think* they need a car but have actually never really thought about it properly or even tried it.
And to those of you who say you'll keep using your car until you can guarantee there are no idiots on the road (in cars), are you sure you're not an idiot when driving yourself? (Nothing personal to those posters.)

Rochdale_Pioneers wrote: »Why is the pump price going up? 4 reasons:
1. the price of oil is going up - a $10 a barrel increase in a month which is about 20%
2. Duty went up as we know
3. Our friendly purveyors of fuel banged their margins up at the same time - which is why a 2.Xp increase inc VAT was more like 4-5p at the pump - they're creaming it in and hoping you'll blame the government.
4. The exchange rate 90 days ago when the fuel you're currently burning had its cost price set.
As for the gap between petrol and diesel its simple - blame the oil companies. Our refineries were set up to crack more petrol than diesel to match market needs a generation ago. They have failed to react to the explosion in diseasals and haven't invested in the capacity needed. Which means that we have to import refined diesel from the continent which pushes its cost price up above petrol. Duty is identical on both fuels, its the cost of the product thats higher.
Hope we will blame the government?
Sorry Rochdale, but 71% of the litre is now pure tax. Of course we will blame the government.
As for prices, well they SHOULD be coming down again. The pound is getting stronger and the oil price is falling, not rising.
Trouble is, they have anchored all the ships off the coast of the UK so that they can demand a higher rate for the oil before handing it over.
I heard there may be another 2p duty put on after April 22nd also. Don't know if this is true yet though.0 -

1)We have a child of under two where can he go on a bike.
2) my wife works 14 miles away and need to drop the child of to the minders near work.
2) My parents live 14 miles away and no bus routes on a weekend and no train whatsoever.
3) My wifes parent live 25 miles away and no bus or trains at all (not without multiple stops no trains possible at all)
4) how do I travel on holiday.
5) how do I get to meetings.
I am not picking holes in what you do, it is great
but for many in rural areas there is no viable alternative0 -

I think it depends solely on where you live. I have a couple of cycle lanes around me, one for about 3 metres (I am not kidding) and one for about 400 yards.
That's it on my 21 mile commute to work.
It's damn dangerous to be on a push bike on these A roads. There are a couple who I see doing this most mornings, but one has already caused (well not him personally, but the bike being there) a collision.
Bendy, narrow, high hedged A roads.....and push bikes, simply do not mix well.0 -

apart from dding the word often before the highlighted ''no'' I'd agree. Alot of people in rural/off the regular public transport system are older, people, many have more than one very young child.
I'd agree people don't get places under their own steam enough, but I'd deny that life as we expect it and are expected to live it would be possible in many areas with out access to cars.0 -

I agree on that one I used to cycle 14 miles a day when younger (just for fitness)
i was nearly squashed against a wall by a caravan when someone went past me, they have a habit of pulling in when the car is past you not the whole vehicle.
A roads and motorbikes = danger,
A Roads and push bikes = Hospital visit some time.0
