I started with Direct Line in 2003 (£1100 3rd Party Only on a 2.0i car) and have heard that they are often good for new drivers.

My sister started on Quinn because they offered her the cheapest quote.

I personally hate Churchill as I have had bad experiences with them in the past despite never having had insurance with them (one of their clients hit my car and I never got a penny out of them), but I have heard many new drivers recommend them so worth a look I suppose.

    Hi there

Is it right that "pass plus" also helps bring down the insurance?

My son passed his test last year when he was 19 (first time round) ;), he has a vauxhall corsa 1.2 SXi, has his own insurance, with Swinton, and paid approx £1,400 a year, pays in monthly repayments though, he did after go in for his pass plus, had his certificate but not taken this back to the insurers, saying that, they may not do anything about it now until its due in August I think it is.

Hopefully if he keeps his nose clean here, whether or not the cover will come down this year we don't know, but surely the Pass plus should help, am I correct? Currently just 3rd party/fire and theft.

Thanks. (all this pass plus issues are all new to me).:D

Sorry to butt in on your thread......:o

    Hi,
I am also a 19 year old male, i passed my test in august 2007 and have just renewed my insurance with Norwich union. They have a rapid bonus policy which is designed for young drivers, it is a 9 month policy but after the 9 months are up they give you an equivalent 1 year no claims discount so if you stick with them you can get 5 years no claims in only 45 months compared to the 60 months if you took an annual policy.

My first 9month policy with them cost £1366 and i have just renewed at £1002. The policy is fully comprehensive and includes what you would expect from a normal policy, courtesy car, windscreen cover etc. You can't get a quote for this policy online though you need to ring them and ask for a rapid bonus quote. I have a 53 reg 1.2 Vauxhall corsa sxi 3dr.

It doesn't always work out to be the cheapest for everyone, but it certainly has for me, both when taking out the inital policy and also when renewing only a few days ago.

    Hope this helps :D
    Rob

Wow Rob that is very good for your age, especially fully comp etc.

My son bought his car like your car in about August time last year, purchased this before he passed his test, as he wanted extra lessons where his dad taken him out in it, so obviously when he passed he had to pay a little more on the insurance, he actually pays the amount £1,400 over 12 months, but just on 3rd party fire and theft.

    Worth shopping around though.;)X

I would love to go on my dads policy but he has had 2 minor bumps in the last year so if I had to claim for any reason it would really screw his premiums up, alas there is no chance he would let me. I turn 20 in 6 months or so, but I simply can't wait that long :p I spent so much money on passing my test the 4th time it's a goal to get my first car.

Thanks for the suggestions rob and nico, elephant quoted me 3k and norwich union 5k! These insurance companies vary so much it's rediculous.

At the moment I'm doing what fto said and trying to get quotes from absolutely everywhere, oddly enough direct line are the cheapest at the moment (£1830) but I remember them quoting me stupid amounts only a month ago? Insure Your Motor are next cheapest at £20 over direct line, but aren't they a comparison company?

Any more suggestions would be welcome, thanks guys :)

No, you have got this wrong. We are saying put a older person on "Your" policy has a named driver..............it often brings the premium down.Any accidents you have, will not effect his ncb.

    Hi,
Just to add that i did pass plus as soon as i passed my driving test and norwich union gave me a 1 year introductory no claims discount for doing it on the rapid bonus policy, this might help to explain how i have got my cover for the price that i have :D

But again pass plus doesn't always help, but when i was looking direct line give you a 20% discount for pass plus (Could be more now!), norwich union gave me the introductory discount but it does depend on each insurer as to what level of discount they give you, i found when i was looking for quotes that it either made no difference at all or sometimes made it more expensive, but if you look at this website it gives some of the insurers who do give pass plus discount http://www.passplus.org.uk/insurers.asp

Another point about the pass plus though is that usually it has to be used within 1 year of you taking the pass plus so with your son they may not take it into account

    Hope this helps

Try the NFU national farmers union
My then 17 year old insured a saab 900 turbo with them (hes a classic car nut )for £2500 but then did his pass plus they took 33% off

He is not a member of the NFU http://www.nfumutual.co.uk/

  • Wow thanks for all the suggestions.

I have tried ecar, elephant and co-op, all of which were 3k+, but thanks for the suggestions!

I phoned up direct line who are still the cheapest I can get and they said there is a 5% discount for pass plus, so it would save me £100 but pass plus costs around £140 and the 12 for 10 months runs out at the end of this month so I don't think I will bother unless I can update my policy after I do it.

I tried changing it to fully comprehensive, but unfortunately with most insurers that added a grand on, but with direct line it comes out as exactly the same price, so is it worth taking that? I would never claim on it because of no claims but can it add a higher excess if I ever need to claim on third party?

I asked my father and he said it would be alright if I added him on my policy, but with his 2 accidents in the past year I won't hold my breath lol.

Any more suggestions would be welcome. At the moment I'm looking at 10 - 12 year old Peugeot 106's or Vauxhall Corsas, but I'm open to suggestions.

    Thanks again.

Yes, you can add the Pass Plus discount on after the policy is set up - you just need to post in the certificate.

If you are making the claim off the third party insurer you don't have to pay an excess. You only pay the excess if *you* are making a claim off *your* insurer.

From memory, I believe in your case your fire and theft excess will be the same (£150*) whether its comprehensive or tpft - its just the accidental damage excess thats higher (£400*). It might be worth double checking though before you accept it.

*assuming you've not got a high spec car, convictions etc
