The reason that this idea of Mandelson's is such a bad idea is because over 80-85% of new vehicles purchased in the UK are imported.

So for every £2k "given away" by the government £1600 will be supporting jobs in Italy, France, Spain & Germany

I can see the appeal in Mandelson wanting to be a "good European", but it realy would be a scandalous waste of money.

The argument that this policy is self funding through increased VAT is also bogus. A fair proportion of extra sales are effectively just brought forward, in addition to the fact that spending on other large items would fall to partly offset what is spent on cars.

its only being a "good european if the rest are doing it too- in any case I cant see the germans buying one of our cars instead of a nice VW or Audi :rotfl:

I mean, please. This is one of the worst ideas going. Id expect, to be able to haggole 2 poxy K off a BN car on the forecourt as simply driving off it will reduce its value by at least this much.

This YET AGAIN is the government proposing to increase debt to those with a sweetner. Yes there are a handful of people who c an probab ly pay cash for a new car, but most wont unless there is a good reason- I dont think 2k is a good reason.
How much will it cost to dispose of all these cars? What about the environmental degrwadation of scrapping these cars? Will it soon be against the law to drive a car more than 10yo ( unless its 2jags witha nice vintage one?) They should have a word with Vorderman, she can teach them a thing or two. ;)

This country depresses me, the government are SO dumb a55 :wall:
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Yeah OK clever clogs. It was sixty years ago when I took my test, except I didn't need to take one due to my ware experience (tanks mostly). Apart from one unforunate mother and child incident, didn't see them, bit drunk, I have an unblemished licence. Which has made my decision not to purchase car insurance a rather good MSE one.

You are so not 77! :rotfl:

• The Government will give up to £2k for scrapping your 9+yr old car for a new or nearly new car.

Has anybody read what year constitutes aa nearly new car? I have a 10 yr old motor (value £1K) and was going to buy a 3 yr old motor - would I benefit?

Reports have said its supposed to be less than 1 yr old.

This would be to get all the prereg'd cars out from the massive carparks across Britain that were simply manufactured & registered to boost sales figures! .....

28th February 2007

New cars depreciate by an average of 28 per cent as soon as they're driven off the forecourt, an Auto Express investigation reveals today. And one reason for the huge loss facing buyers is that more vehicles are being pre-registered to meet sales targets than official figures suggest, pushing down values.
Only 3,389 models were listed as pre-registered last year, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). But when we called dealers from 12 different car firms, we found half had some pre-reg motors for sale. And one sales-man even admitted to holding up to 300 at a time and selling around 900 a year!

Auto Express contributor Jeff Paterson, from trade bible Glass's Guide, said: "Tech-nically, pre-reg cars are no longer new, but the fact they have only delivery miles on the clock and are cheap pushes down the value of all the other used vehicles. Trouble is, the industry has found ways round the regulations to hide the true number of these models entering the market."

He explained that often pre-reg cars are not sold until they are more than three months old, because then they don't have to be included in the SMMT's reports. Most of the dealers we spoke to in our study (see Page 44) admitted they did this.

One salesman told us: "We had 250 pre-registered vehicles in September last year in order to hit our sales targets. But we couldn't sell them to customers straight away, because the rules state that we have to keep them for a quarter of a year."

These models have never been officially listed as pre-registered. Paterson says such cases are on the rise: "New sales are set to fall, which is likely to result in more being pre-registered to meet targets," he warned.

We've all seen Brown's definition of Prudence. What the hell does he think Profligate is? Presumably that would just be setting fire to wads of cash.

Might be worth a go. Nothing else he does works.

Looks like it's on then. Scrappage scheme about to go ahead.

Love it. Can't wait for this big fail.

Hope theres no heavy taxes on "non green" vehicles or running of vehicles in this budget then, as that is the complete hight of all hypocrisy.

May aswell give a few hundred million to the Arab's too, as were paying them less for oil.

Don't worry. Theres probably a new scheme around the corner whereby the government will give you 1k to get rid of your sofa, and then buy another on 22% APR spread over 15 years.

Sounds incredibly stupid. But I dread to think what they will come up with next to get us spending money we dont have.

10k for people who can't afford their £500 a month rent to buy a house maybe!

The UK is the 4th biggest manufacturer of cars in Europe (after Germany, France and Spain). Roughly 80% of output is exported which is probably the 2nd highest proportion (after Spain I would guess) so someone must be buying them.

I find it pretty peculiar the English snobbery about german cars (and I drive one). A Toyota made in Derby or a Nissan made on Tyneside are the equal of similar German cars in the same class.

And do you really, for one single, minute little moment, think that these people, running around in these older cars, will have the means to go out and buy a new Toyota or Nissan?

Course not. It will be the basic range of Peugeots, Citreons and maybe at a push, a Ford Ka. If anyone is going to buy under this scrappage scheme, if they have an ounce of sense, it will only be those going for a 5-6k brand new car, which only gives you the 107, citreon C1 (is it a C1 or C2?), maybe a Renault Clio, or some other obscure box on pram wheels.

For the rest of us, who want bigger cars, who, in their right mind, is going to run along to Toyota for a brand new avensis and pay RRP price because they can get 2k back?

Anyone with half a brain looking to buy one of these cars knows A) you can barter B) you can buy from other sources with a lot of money off the dealer price.

If these people are stupid enought to run off to toyota and spend 14k on a new saloon because they got 1k more than they would have got trade value for their existing car, then more fool them.

The cars WE produce, are too expensive to see a slice of pie in this scheme. Unless the nation is a bunch of complete morons. Hmmmm

Here's a snippet from the BBC news release on the scrappage story...

"while Jaguar Land Rover has been granted £27m to develop a fuel efficient vehicle."

They could make them more efficient by replacing the fat b@stard driving it with someone a bit slimmer.
