I doubt those Huguents repatriated the profit to France though!!
Profit doesn't go to France or any foreign country. Profit goes to shareholders who can be just as easily British as French.

The only way this can help the car industry is if someone who wouldn't otherwise have bought a new car decides that, on the back of this, they will.

Well that would be me. I would never consider buying a shiny new car out of the showroom. This (depending on cost of course) may just swing it for me. Having had brand new company cars over the course of my career, it is just lovely getting a new car. But yes, of course, it wouldn't make sense without a financial incentive.

My 11-year-old car is costing large sums every year at MOT/Service time, it's been time to get the car off the road for a while.

I don't approve of the scheme, but with a bit of luck, it may just suit me - we'll see in September when I have enough cash to go looking!

Its funny really I have a 18 year old car sat outside my house with my name on the V5 and I've had it for over a year.....its not moved for about the same amount of time. only cost me 300 quid.

And i won't be buying a new car.

It seems that the scheme will be half paid for by the taxpayer and half by the car companies:

In addition, it's only the first 300,000 cars - or £300 million.

OK, I must admit, I'm a tad confused. I'm just back from work and have only read a few articles about this Cash For Bangers scheme but I'm a bit lost.
I have a 16 year old astra which has a few minor problems but is still a great wee runner despite being 16 years old. Does this scheme mean I will get £1,000 cash for scrapping my car and £1000 from a dealer towards a new car? Because to be honest I'd rather do my wee car up and keep it going (cheap - ish) or scrap it for £1,000 and spend £1,000 on a newer second hand car, maybe R reg or up. How does it all work?
If I'm getting £1,000 cash I might not bother with her MOT but to be honest I'd rather keep my wee car. Even if the fuel tax is going up again!
Is anyone else sick fed up of this Government? I certainly am.

I believe basically you take your old car to the dealer...point to the NEW car you want and they take 2k off the price on the screen.

no cash involved otherwise people would just go out and spend the money on beer and widescreen TV's and then get the car on credit and tell all their mates they got a good deal.

The big difference here then, and how succesful it has been in Germany etc is the very fact in Germany they could but one up to a year old, wiping hundreds or thousands off the window price in the first place.

Here, we actually have to buy new.

So here we go. Say I want a Ford Focus. And to be environmentally friendly I go for a 1.6 TDCI.

    So I select a 1.6 TDCI Style.

    Broadspeed online price: £13,521
    Ford Price: £17,430

So, I take my 10 year old car, worth £400 to the dealer, and the price gets taken down to £15,430.

I lose my car worth £400. And pay 2 grand more, for the same car, for going to the dealer.

Or, I buy from broadspeed, save myself £4,000, whack my car on ebay and get 400 quid for it.

THIS is why it won't, or shouldnt work in this country. Of course, if I could have bought a 1 year old 1.6 TDCI focus for 11k, I'd have taken my car along, got it for 9k, and been very very happy.

    Broadspeed prices here
Ford prices here (need to download PDF for actual comparison on any of the cars).

    Brilliant scheme, then.

Probably the most worrying thing, is that a lepper like me could do that within 5 minutes. Lord Madelson seems utterly incapable of seeing this.

Plus, £17,500 on the road price, for a 1.6 TDCI Focus!?! Have fords prices shot up or soemthing!? Thats insane!

Ford have increased prices twice this year, citing increased unit costs and fall in value of sterling Vs Euro where (most) models are built
