Budget row over 2K payout to scrap a car

I have a 1996 Classic mini and not tempted at all by this - not attracted to the soul-less new plastic boxes at all...

Car scrappage scheme, primarily aimed at supporting industry Scheme expected to have a neutral or modestly positive environmental impact.
taken directly from the budget. says it all to me.Converted comper to MSE. Thank you for all your answers!0 -
Im not remotely interested in the environmental returns,I am however tempted by this i run two vans in my business one newish Merc and an old Renault.
The old one is ready for swapping and i have been holding off, credit crunch etc but also looking round and waiting for good deals.
Also this will remove a lot of secondhand vehicles from the market and reduce available cars and vans so more people will be forced to buy new.
The van i will be scrapping is too good to scrap really and someone could still get a lot of use from it.0 -
It's headline attempting nonsense. Like the VAT cut - smoke and mirrors. Not to mention the coming increase in N.I.
Simple way to help people? Stop taxing them to death. Stop bleeding businesses through hundreds of expensive to administer rules and stealth taxes.
In short - simplify taxation - make it more obvious, fairer and slightly cheaper.
Want to save money Mr. Brown? Resign and call an election.
Plus save money by penalizing MPs with their snouts in the trough, and by stopping extremely affluent, greedy and immoral individuals from hiding away money in tax havens and other tax evasion schemes.0 -

Some people cannot afford to buy new and rely on the second hand car market. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

I have done for many years myself am nearly 40 and have only ever bought one brand new car and that wasn't my best financial decision.
But this will remove a lot of secondhand cars and vans from circulation.0 -
I'm quite interested in this scheme. My only worry is that showrooms will take this opportunity to raise prices using the £2000 grant to disguise their greed.
Hopefully there will be something in place to stop them from doing this, as it makes many of the models I've been looking at cheaper than second-hand ones currently on sale.0 -

Yes but over the next seven years do you think you or your friend will spend less on maintenance, you do the "math"
I hate that American expression!!!!0 -
If Mr Darling was offering to scrap my old car for a brand new replacement at a cost of 2K, I would be interested. As it stands, it's no better a deal than could be got in the current climate anyway.0
