Please if any one can give some advice i'd appreciate it. my daughter was painting with water based paints and left dirty water for cleaning her brush on the hearth. in walks my mums Chihuahua and drinks it stopped her within 2/3 seconds she seemed fine.

then around an hour later she went into a kind of fit like a flinching leg.now she's not walking only standing if you help her. she seems to be getting better lifting her head at noises now. any one any ideas.

we dont have a vet to call and she's only 4 mths

yes, you had better get your dog to your loal emergency vets asap, and take the paints or their wrappers with you. NOW

There will be a local vet who does an out of hours service. Get the yellow pages out or google, and quickly. Where in the country are you?

Seriously, if there is something toxic in the paints it will only take a tiny amount to prove fatal to such a little pup, and speed is of the essence.

She has to go immediately...now. It will cost her, but it may very well be a dead dog otherwise.

Tell her to take the paint packet/wrapper or tubes so the vet knows what the dog has had - this is very important.

Have you found an out of hours vet in the area?

ETA - she will need to ring the vet first, sometimes they are on call and have to come out,

It would probably have been a little less if she had been registered with the vets. But seriously, it's essential, the dog has to go to the vets now.

Has your mum got pet insurance?

ETA - what sort of paints were they? poster, watercolour, acrylics or something else?

Being the owner of a chi, this broke my heart to read ... please let us know as soon as possible how the little one is.

As has been said, just a tiny amount of something they shouldn't ingest can make them seriously ill ... just because they can be boisterous and bolshy little imps, they really aren't made of strong stuff at all.

They are such loving little things (I'm on my third now and am still amazed how devoted they can be *S*) ... trouble is, they always want to be right next to the person they love, so you need to watch them like a hawk. People think they will just sit on your knee and sleep but oh no, not a chihuahua!!

It is a terrible day to start with for you and your poor Mum ... I have my fingers crossed tightly that your little girl gets through this okay ...
