now it sounds like a problem a mate of mine had recently..
1) log onto your router on the desktop PC and check the DHCP settings. Make sure the IP range has enough for all devices.
2) he also had another connection for BT under his network settings which seemed to try and always take control of anything. I had to delete this before i could get the router to issue an IP0 -

I am now up and running with my wireless enabled laptop.

In actually clicked on the link in Chippys post and followed the instuctions and it worked after a couple of mistakes on my part.
