I have managed to get my modem/router up and running on my main PC.
I can also connect via my laptop and wireless card.
However my wireless connection is unsecured.
I obviously need to secure my network but after typing in the above address into my browser I cannot go any further. It lets me into the sign on stage but when I enter "admin" as the user and the password as reccomended in the manual I get an error message "401 unauthorised"
My router is a Linksys WAG354G (UK)
Can anyone help or point out a different method of getting a secure network?
Thanks

if you can't access the router then the password has probably been reset. On my Belkin router there is no password so try leaving it blank. If that doesn't work there should be a reset button on the back of the router which (i think) should reset it to the factory default and clear the password (and internet connection details etc etc)0

Try tabbing past the user name (thus leaving it null) and entering admin as the password.

Is the router brand new or 2nd hand? What is the IP address of the computer where you're trying to logon from?0

I'm definitely no expert, but a couple of thoughts:
1. I'm assuming that you are definitely connected to your router, not next door's for instance. Best way to tell is to turn your router off and see if your connection stops.
2. I think 401 means that either your username or passowrd is incorrect. I'm assuming that you haven't changed the username or password recently. The defaults are usually "admin" and "password" respectively (all lower case).
3. If your network is unsecured then someone else may have used the default username and password to log in, then changed the password to stop you accessing your router.
4.To my knowledge there is no other way of securing a network other than accessing the router's setup pages. I'd suggest flashing the router memory (should be instructions in the manual, normally stick a pin in a tiny hole in the back of the case or short out a couple of contacts on the circuit board), which should clear any non-standard usernames or passwords.
You will also lose any other settings you have applied, as the factory defaults will be re-loaded.
Hope you get it working!

Hi,
The default on Netgear is 'admin' and then 'password' in lower case.
If you have not changed this give it a try.0 -
UserName: admin
Password: admin
If its already had its pwd changed from default then you need to hard-reset the router to get the login and pwd back to admin.
Hope this helps.0 -
To reset.
Hold the reset button in on the back for 10 seconds.
**WARNING** This will loose ALL information stored in the router back to default settings0 -
Hi cslogg
I have the same one as you and i think that you have password protected it from the the default password. If you havent already reset it it will be a password you already set for it.
It must be one that you thought you would remember.0 -
I have the exact same router and all you need to do is leave the username blank and type in the password admin.0
