While getting car insurance quotes recently, one of the companies said my application would be checked by Insurance Hunter. A quick google found...

    http://www.uk.experian.com/www/pages/what_we_offer/products/insurance_hunter.html

That's not for the purpose of applying, its when you have a claim - they then utilise the Experian Data Analytics bit of the site, again a subsidiary of Experian but they don't check when you apply for insurance, its purely when you make a claim.

    Incorrect.

I have a freind who worked for Pinnacle Insurance and she said that Insurance Hunter was indeed used at application stage.

Nope, my son in law works for direct line, brother in law Aviva and they both say not true - costs and data protection prohibits such need when they would null and void any policy should they find out later about Hunter data.......

Obviously when you think about it, the part of Experian DA that is used at claims stage is relevant - at application its down to declaration - not verification which in a nutshell means if they accept you and you lied then they don't pay out.

why would an insurer waste money for a hunter (sorry, Experian DA) search when they would simply refuse the claim....

Makes sense when you understand insurance.....

Yea there are a lot of rumours but with general insurance its not quite the same as they just refuse to pay out and they've actually made money out of you cos they don't refund your premiums...

Say this happens, you then apply for insurance elsewhere - they will ask 'have you ever been refused insurance in the past' - at this point if you answer NO the hunters check would kick in (if there was enough matching data) and automatically flag the account. You'd still get a quote etc but there would be a hunter flag; its an automated process.

Your policy would still be set up but you'd never get a payout - thats dodgy but the way they work, apparently....

This is the example from Direct Line, Aviva as far as i've been told do not use Hunter unless you make a claim. They check it with each claim as this records dodgy claims/previous claims/ the lot (apparently).....

I'm right confused now haha! :D

Don't they have some kind of responsibility to explain the data they are providing?

Nope. N Hunter is a FPA and FPA's do not have to 'explain' themselves because part of Data Protection (7th Principle) allows lenders to retain data that is deemed 'insider' that would suggest fraud or AML monitoring is in use.

Basically, if we SAR them they will show us what they have but they will not go out their way to elaborate - you have to ask (extracting teeth from a sabretooth would be easier) for an explanation.

In a nutshell, if you see the term 'Refer to Applicant' or 'Applicant Refer' then this is a fraud warning otherwise it is fine and dandy!

OK I've finally got my National Hunter report back and have a few questions-

First I have one 'Applicant Refer' note from Sygma bank, now I know what this is for as my ex-partner used one of my credit cards fraudulently. They accepted this was not me using this card and my CIFAS report shows this as a category 2 - victim of impersonation. So do I need to do anything about this, ie do I need to get in touch with Sygma to get them to remove this 'Applicant Refer'?

Second their is a record from 'Barclays Financial Crime (AFDT), product Account, with a Employer name of someone I've never heard of (L Twigger?). Should I be worried about this? Sounds a bit scary, Financial Crime! The main applicant name and address details are all correct.

Last, I have a few records which are clearly a result of my ex-partners illegal activities - a Marks And Spencer Money account (product MSCRDT-DB whatever that is) with the wrong address details and her mobile number. A Creation Consumer Finance (product Loan but no amount listed under loan?), which has name as Miss instead of Mr, and another with Miss for RBS Direct Finance, and the wrong telephone number and finally an MBNA Europe Bank limited which has her mobile number as the contact details.
So should I now be contacting all of the above and making sure they update the details they have on me? Really not sure how important or urgent it is that these details get corrected as soon as possible?
I would help if these reports actually gave you contact details for these companies instead of just a name! They do seem to be as unhelpful as possible, and the National Hunter website doesn't exactly give you a lot of help.
